I'm sure that a female runner who is on the skinny side is glad that her husband isn't a chubby chaser.

Sometimes he suggests dialing down the running, but then I put on a miniskirt and he's OK with it.

I think most of the guys that have problems with their spouses seeing them run have also small kids. Those of you that are making strong statements aka "I would never marry a woman that would not be agreeable of my running/exercise..." probably don't have toddlers in their house. I do, and we have constantly tense moments in our houselhold. I try to run very early in the morning, during lunch at work or on my way home from work, but sometimes even if I come 10 minutes later than I would had I drove car from work, makes my wife angry. And you know what? I understand that. I am father first, then a responsible person for making money and long after that a runner.

My wife had always been a runner, we met while running and because of running, she was a great competitor and national record holder, but with two small kids, she can only get out to run 3-4 times a week. I guess she resents that I am still competing at comparable level to my early twenties, despite my retirement from competitive running just as I turned 30. I made comeback, a successful one, which she wasn't able to do, because we had two kids very close together. Don't take me wrong, we both love our kids very much and we wouldn't change it for running (well, for nothing), but I understand her feelings. I would feel similar in her situation (to be not able to compete at the highest level, because my fitness had slided so much back).

She isn't mad that I run, but she would be more happy if I ran only 3-4 times a week and be totally relaxed about it.

To all of you, who don't have problems with their wives and their running: kids will change that for sure. By the way, I let her run in "the primetime" - at 5Pm during the week, and around 8, 9, 10 AM during the weekend (at which time, my run is long completed), but should I mention what workout I did or how far I ran, she would always become nervous and ask me in condescening tone - what I you still training for? Weren't you planning to retire?

Relationships are sometimes complicated...

Well in this case you need to help her find time for running - it works both ways

What happened to equality - I'm in uk and it seem that in the US there is any even worse double standard than here ie women demand equal pay - but then demand their husband to bne the breadwinner!

It's not wonder so many of them are 'career orientated' I would be passionate about my job if I could spend 5 years having fun at college. Work hard for 5 years then jack it all in and have someone else take the responsibility!

Not every poster on this board must be from the US, or UK. As you may have noticed, there are also other countries in the world, and some foreigners might also speak some English. In many countries it is not possible, or at least financially feasible to leave very young kids at child care and go to work. Almost all she would earn in her profession would be spent on child care, not to speak about other substantial disadvantages if you leave your kids to a stranger to raise them for the majority of the day in their formative years. Kindergardens are available only for kids of 3+ age, and there is a long waiting line.

Anyway, she has quite a nice opportunity everyday to get out the door and run (while I am with kids), but she always finds excuses, why it's not possible. Some are valid (our youngest was up half of the night and she is exhausted), but some are based on lack of willpower and motivation, since running is tough for her and domotivating at such a slow pace.

And it doesn't work both ways with finding time for running, since I am running either when everybody sleeps (at 5AM), or at least when kids have their nap at noon during some weekend days. She is not helping me (in majority of instances) to find time for my running (I would be happy to do my toghest workouts at 5PM and not at 5AM, but I won't even dare to mention it), while I am constantly helping her to find it for her running. I am not complaining about her running, quite the contrary - I urge her to go out and at least walk some with our dog, if she doesn't feel like running. Yet I receive comments and bad looks for my interest in active sports.

In my case, I also rarely go out with friends, I had given up all time consuming hobbies (outside of running, which is limited to 70-90 minutes/day) like mountaneering, skiing, MTB, and rock climbing.

Mostly, I am convinced that it is due to my wife having to be around kids whole day (until I return from work) and it is getting on her brain, which results in a bit too aggresive behaviour. I am sure that many young fathers can relate.

She is resentful of the freedom you enjoy as a man/father who works outside the home. Yes, you both have sacrified your hobbies, free-time, sleep, etc. for the benefit of your child. However, it is clear she has sacrified the most in her life for her family (as most mothers do whether or not they work outside the home).

You need to be more understanding/respectful of her feelings and have an open (non-defensive) conversation with her about what she wants in her life right now. Let her know you are concerned and want to help her find happiness in her life. Then follow through.

Mean what you say, and say what you mean.

What no one seems to get is that when a woman complains about something, she's not really talking about the subject of her complaint - it's something else. Find out the "something else", whether it be help with the kids, more anal, giving her a night out with her fat friends, whatever, and it's problem solved.

Shorter said Bill Rodgers was good at gettting the miles in without making a big deal out of it. we all need to do this.

My wife used to nag about my combination of running and coaching. I think out of stupidity I gave in 5 or 6 years ago and let go of running. I went from 6-1 and 180 to about 215lbs. Recently, I couldn't take my own physical appearance anymore in addition to my borderline high blood pressure. About 2 months ago I changed my diet habits and cut out almost all processed sugars and I am now running 25-30 miles per week. Not a crazy amount, I know, but it's something. I now weigh 184 and I feel better every day. I guess the bottom line. Don't give in. You don't realize how good you feel right now. If you let yourself go, it is really hard work to get back to some sort of fitness.
