Josh Cox will attempt 50k wr attempt this weekend

Josh Cox loves the attention, plain and simple. I prefer to run distances that are the most competitive because its a challenge and everyone else is doing it. How many 2:13 guys (or quicker) are worried about the 50K world record?

Best part, that is a TRACK record. That's a lot laps.

His 24-hour record of 188 miles is pretty much untouchable.In his own words when he finished his record-setting performance: ""I will run no more 24 hour races. Cox's former coach, Kevin McCarey, thinks Cox has mismanaged his career and that his best days are behind him.

“Some people learn from their lessons,” said McCarey, himself a former 2:13 marathoner. “He never learned from his lessons. His running ended a long time ago.”

From a training perspective, McCarey offers three main criticisms of Cox: that he logged far too many miles; that he ran too

much by himself; and that he let himself be coached by Italy's Dr. Gabriele Rosa, who often went months without seeing Cox train.

“Yeah, I did too many miles,” admitted Cox, who once racked up consecutive weeks of 188, 186, 175 and 172 miles, at altitude. “That was five years ago. I've learned.”

To a degree, it pains McCarey to be so critical of Cox.

“As a human being, he's one of the most quality people I've ever met on this planet,” McCarey said. “Just a very loving human being.”

Yet McCarey's criticism doesn't stop with Cox's training.

“He got into other things. You can't get into other things if you're a marathoner, if you want to be one of the best,” McCarey said. “You have to devote yourself to it, and he didn't.”

I'd never thought I'd do this but for once I'm actually defending Geb bashers. Your "what would say, doing Boston, and finishing 14th or so do for him that this cannot?" It's like saying "what would Geb racing New York or London do that his Berlin time trials cannot?" The answer is racing experience buddy. Step one is racing, well, your OLYMPIC EVENT and step two is racing the people you hope to beat to steal the medal from. That's why Geb should do some racing against other competition, and that's why Josh Cox should as well.

It would be notable if he ran a 50k against a notable distance runner.

The first sign you are an idiot is that you are comparing Geb to Josh Cox (not trying to put Cox down) and talking about chasing medals.

As much as I respect Cox, I don't think he (or any other US Olympic marathon runner) will be contending for a medal in 2012.

Sorry, but the type of racing experience a 2:13 marathon runner has versus a 2:04 marathon runner is completely different.

Cox and his 50k attempt are BETTER FOR HIM ON A PROFESSIONAL, IE: $$$ and sponsorship level, than finishing on 14th at Boston or any other spring marathon.

Cox is the highest paid and most well known 2:13 marathon runner in the world and these events like the 50k are why.

Cox got racing experience in December in CIM. This 50k will help further establish him in the area, ultra running, that he wants to go in the future and serves as an excellent base period.

Am I correct in the assumption that he already hold a world record? The Beer Mile? Or is that a different Cox? The Beer Mile WR is far more impressive than the 50k in my eyes...

Not putting down how hard it is to crank out a 14 flat 5 km or 2:16 marathon (respect to all who push the limits), but to act as if success at ultras is a given for the relatively fast is simply wrong. It would really be informed IF you actually a) were fast and b) tried a 50- 100 miler against the best ultra folks out there. Until then you are entitled to your opinion and that is about it.

Maybe talk to Max King and Chris Lundstrom and Michael Wardian about how easily and assuredly speed translates up. Talk to them about how all those 16 - 18 minute 5 km guys like Jurek and Anton and Nick Clark and Roes are just hobby-jogging for hours and any old 15 min 5 km guy could whup 'em.... "IF THEY WANTED TO." See what they say because they have a forum from which to speak since they have actually tried racing these guys. Best...
