According to the NPR site they are getting multiple conflicting reports. They have a link to live coverage from KOLD-TV. KOLD just said that she is in surgery and that they will have a press conference at 1:30 Tucson time (Mountain?). The latest from the KOLD coverage is saying 11 were shot and there are a number of fatalities.

I don't know about this assassin, but the talk from the Right has been treasonous and inflammatory in both Obama's and Clinton's presidencies, and so it has been unsurprising that so many attacks on government buildings and officials by right wingers have occurred during them. I didn't necessarily expect that a member of Congress would be assassinated, but I did expect numerous attempts on Obama's life, because the crazy right wing message has suggested that we need a revolution, that he is destroying the country despite all the indicators of his presidency being positive, etc.

I live by the elementary school in San Diego County, where a shooter shot at the kids and wounded two of them. Construction workers tackled the moron after he jumped a fence to shot at the running kids.
I don't believe any knows why the guy did it. Like this guy, politics is not entirely the reason. He happened to shot a politician, as well as others. Guys like this have very deep rooted problems.

Update: Hospital spokeswoman tells Reuters Rep. Giffords is in surgery. "She's alive."
If everyone there were allowed/required to carry an M-16, this would never have happened. They would have taken the guy down in an instant.

The reason Bush for a lot of BS is he came after Clinton.
Clinton got luck, the deficit was artificially down, caused by magic bookkeeping. Clinton inherited some policies that helped the deficit look prettier than it should have.
Bush's malaprops made him a much easier target.
