Why are masters runners so obsessive and creepy?

The only real response is: what are you going to be doing when you are 50? Do you think it will never happen?

In high school the local runners used to meet up at the forest outside of town to run on the weekends. We were all pretty good, though certainly not spectacular, 15-something XC types. This was all organized by an older guy (~50s) who just liked running and had been pretty good in his younger years. He had started the group when one of his kids was in high school and ran XC; I think he eventually ended up coaching at her school for a few years. He could still keep up with us, except the last few miles if we really hammered. He wasn't creepy or obsessive. One of the nicest men I have ever met.

i suppose the underlying question of the OP is still out there. Are runners in particular creepy, or is it just masters runners? If the latter, I would agree if the singular motivating interest is to elevate self via the happenstance victory over a stranger, be they young or old, then um, yeah -- that's creepy.

and, chasing Olympic glory is nothing to shake a stick at. That's an honorable part of anyone's past if true. We tend to be so hard on ourselves that the honor of the quest is lost.

I think runners tend to be a bit odd, but not creepy.

You mean, like obsessing over the age of other runners to the point that you'd start a rude and insulting thread about it - probably laughing because you get a kick out of being rude and insulting? Dude, that's creepy.

The truth is that masters runners are pretty much just older versions of their younger selves.

Creepy and obsessive young runners like yourself grow up to be creepy, obsessive masters guys.

The rest of us continue to enjoy the sport and celebrate our and everyone else's participation.

Here's another truth: really good young runners never seem to have a problem with masters runners. It's only the really slow, obsessive, creepy ones.

But there's a place for runners like you too: Hiding out on anonymous threads with so little to cheer your dreary life that you think insulting 20 million runners is exciting and fun.

One last thing: anyone who groups 20 million runners into a single category (or two in your case) is either: a bigot, ignorant, rude, or just plain stupid.

So there you are, an assessment of you, our little troll: creepy, obsessive, slow, and stupid.

If they are creepy and obsessive as oldsters, they were creepy and obsessive when they were young, too. Just doin what they do.
