Then "unholy Cumulus" measures his track at 398.8 meters. My question is: is there anyway to mask the running total on gmaps so that you could only make 'blind' measurements? If so, how close can you get? Multiple trials are fine with me. What is the real accuracy of using gmpas to measure a known measured course?
I just attempted to measure some high school tracks in Atlanta using the least accurate fashion that I could imagine. Using the highest resolution, but only two measurements from gmaps, the lengths of the straights and the width of the track, and using 2*l + pi*w, these were my results:
Adams Stadium: 412.95 (.0645,.0406,miles converted to km)
St. Pius HS: 410.43 (.1061,.0631)
Lakeside HS: 401.23 (.0982,.0652)
Shamrock HS: 414.66 (.1068,.064)
Using one of the worst techniques possible, I measured at largest a 4% error. This post and the four track measurements took me less than ten minutes. I am sure that far greater accuracy could be obtained with little extra effort.
