Derrick and the Rosas on the same team? That's not even fair. The arms race between Oregon, Stanford, and OK State continues! Lutz should have signed with OK State. Not too far from home.

Obviously Pearson had a poor race at MOC and killed it at FLNE. If he had had as good a race at MOC as he did at FLNE he would probably have been right with Mazzacarro for 2nd. For comparison, the 6th place runner at FLNE, 4 seconds behind Pearson, had run 15:43 at Bowdoin Park the weekend before, winning the state Federation meet. Rosa's time was only 8 seconds ahead of him; Pearson could potentially have broken 15:40 at Bowdoin Park.

The kid they got from Flagstaff last year was supposed to be a phenom. What did he do this year?

Well one thing is if he only ran 3 meets his legs are fresh. Gotta compare that to guys who have raced rigorous courses all season and this guy just came in. And he didnt run the race much faster than the other qualifiers.

Also I think last year at FLNE I read there were wind gusts up to 30 mpw. Could be why Miles didn't ru nthat fast of a time.

And Lutz is a stud, gtfo haters.

Murray is a 9:05 guy and Pearson is a 9:06 guy. Sorry, but that is pretty good. Not 8:46 good, but Noelle didn't beat a bunch of weak links. He beat some talent at Sunken Meadow. That being said, the real test is next weekend, where a great race matters more.

what other schools were on Chad Noelle's short list?

Did he make any other visits?

Pearson ran a great race and Chad ran even better- and of course you are right that next weekend will be the real test and after that we can argue again about the quality of NXN and FL and who would have beat who...

Go back and look at the fields and tell me which one is stronger. And Pearson is not as good as Mazz or Rosa. Mazz would have beat Rosa at MOC if it was not for his team being involved he was racing conservative in 6th place at 2 miles and then dropped the hammer on those guys. He raced a third of the race and dominated guys like Pearson

To the people bashing the FL NE meet this past weekend: You probably don't really know much about the Sunken Meadow course and just how spectacular Noelle's performance was.

The top times at the meadow all date back to the 70's and 80's (most of them.) Noelle's 15:42, made him the 4th fastest ever at the course. For his first XC race, that is quite the feat!

Nobody has ran under 15:50 at Sunken Meadow since the days of the Kevin Tshirhart and Ryan Sheridan duels, and those two ONLY ran 15:47! Back then, those times were looked at with awe and amazement.

If you want to look further than Chad Noelle, that race was historic. 12 people broke 16 minutes, with 10 of them 15:50 or faster. The record books at Sunken Meadow have certainly been rewritten.For those of you familiar with XC in the northeast region, this is a BIG deal.

Therefore, stop comparing Noelle to guys like Jim Rosa or Cheserek. They were in two completely different races on completely different courses. Everyone who has a clue about XC knows that you cannot compare times from one course to another. Who's to say Noelle wouldn't have beaten Rosa in a head-to-head matchup if Rosa ran at Sunken Meadow (or if Noelle ran at Bowdoin?)

Taken as a whole, the top FLNE boys performances were definitely more impressive than the NXN NY & NE performances. However, these are qualifying races, so we don't know who was going flat out or who was holding back a bit. Hopefully all of them will run well over the next two weekends.

Even more impressive...Noelle's time is actually the 3rd fastest in Sunken Meadow history and the fastest time on that course in 33 years (the two faster times were in 1977).

For some reference, when Alex Hatz won the 2008 New York State Title on the Sunken Meadow course he had to outkick Alex Leuchanka from Shen and their times were 15:58 and 15:59, 22 seconds ahead of third place. Only 3 athletes broke 16:10 that day and NY is a pretty solid XC state. Other big names that day were Chris Stogsdill (the 2009 National Mile Champ - 16:11), Alex Deir (the national steeplechase champion - 16:15), Max Straneva (16:25)

I was at this race and the wind was unreal (but it almost always is at Sunken Meadow) - Most of the course is protected from the wind though.

I agree that the label Phenom might be a little strong (need to last longer than one race for that label), but there is no question that this particular performance was PHENOMENOL!

As for people bashing...why? This years graduating class with Verzbikas, the Rosas, Mazza, Elkaim, Gedton, Mousa, Lutz don't forget about Zenallaisse (?) and now Noelle should have people really excited. With the strides that American Distance running has made at the highest level it is nice to see that there should be another generation of it coming through. I would bet there is a lot of different training philosophies among these athletes...heres to hoping that all their college coaches can find what works best for each of them and they all become world renowned.

If you look strictily on track pr's Mazz 4:09 and 9:00 Rosa 4:07 and 8:51 Elkaim 4:12 (never raced a good mile he closed his two mile in this) and 8:46 which one of those guys does Noelle and Pearson's pr's beat? All three of those guys and cheserek are better than anyone from footlocker.

Look at the race between Cheserek and how badly he beat Pearson. NXN was so much better than Footlocker

I'm not sure what the deal is with you people (and I mean that as exclusionary as possible) and that word but it certainly seems to strikes a nerve with the LRC faithful. Does it really need that much protection?

Also, I think the use of the word "irony" fits very nicely with the sentence. e.g., it conveyed my desire to denote the "irony" in this Noelle Season. So free up your rhetorical, fundamentalist view of what is appropriate for "irony" and live a little.
