Standards for 2011 Worlds Announced (Men's 1500 3:35.00, Men's 10k 27:40)

They'll all go down to NZ and OZ in Feb/March to get the times.

All I have to say is USA Women's Steeple is WEEK.

Aziza Aliyu, 16:24

Teresa McWalters, 16:32

Annie Bersagel, 16:34

Lindsay Allen, 16:37

And Lindsay Allen is one of our best steeple women? NOT GOOD!

No way the window will close in May, 2012 (unless they meant just for the 'thon).

Most likely was just talking about the 'thon. The article was focusing on Kim Smith deciding to run London or Boston in 2011. You probably wouldn't want to run your London 2012 qualifying marathon in June 2012, but it would be a bit different if it was the 1500 m.

Sometimes there are visa issues if you wait until the last minute to decide who is going. It is also more appealing to TV if the team is picked, final answer, at USAs. There's also the argument that has been made many times that athletes who chase marks are usually too fried to do well at Worlds. And it can be stressful to any B standard athletes on the team who are not sure if they're really going on the trip or not.

Not saying I agree with it, but those are some of the issues that have been brought up in the past and will probably be used as reasons.

So was anything determined at convention? Will Jon Chaplain let anybody know anytime soon? Those are some high marks to qualify and with only the 10k guys with qualifying marks, our elites need to set up some races this pring for 3:35, 8:23, and 13:20.

Will there be chasing after USATF's and who will be allowed?

The steeple is a strange event. It's also a specific talent. Sara Hall can't break 10:00 (she has tried twice).Most 9:50 steeplers could qualify for USAs in another event. Most steeplers don't run other events very often because it usually takes a few steeples each year to start running well.The gap beween the top US steeplers and what it takes to qualify is 45 seconds. That's a pretty big gap. However, it's not a problem, as long as the top steeplers are competitive world-wide, and they are. However, I am not sure why we are discussing what a 9:50 steepler can run for 1500m or 5000m, I am pretty sure we are looking at IAAF world standards.

She actually is not. Our top steeple women are Jenny Barringer (or whatever her name is now), Anna Willard (or whatever her name is now) and Lisa Aguilera. They have all run under 9:25. Lindsey Anderson and Bridget Franek have run 9:30-32.Lindsay Allen has run around 9:40 and is part of a handful of 9:40-45 runners that the US has. However, while she has the IAAF standard, she is not an actual threat to make the team unless it's a very tactical race that goes her way, or a large portion of the top-5 steeplers get hurt or run a different event.

Either way, a road 5k in December says very little about someone's ability to run a fast steeple in August.

It changes the preparation for the season.

The US Trials are at the end of June and they would like to hit a 3:34 before then.

But it is rare to find too many sub 3:35 races that early.

You will likely have guys chasing the standard after the Trials.

If Lagat runs the 5000 and Wheating the 800, the US would be hard pressed to run a complete 1500m team at 2011 Worlds.

This is what I was thinking in November when the IAAF standards came out.

So now we are about to start USATF trials and there are zero men that have hit the 'A' standard in the 1500.

I believe all of the other events on the track have at least 3 qualifiers.

What was huge about that 10000m was that a couple of faster US milers were trying the 10000m. Up until then, aside from Mills (Olympic gold 1964) and Prefontaine (solo US 10000m record in first attempt) no comfortably <4 milers had tackled the longer distances for the US.

So from that historic Stanford 10000m

Ritz: got injured

Webb: got burned out

Famiglietti: got retired (after being injured and burned out)

2011:

Solinsky, Rupp, Curtis all <4 mile capability.

Solinsky: not running the 10000m

Rupp: moving up to the marathon now that Ritz is injured

and Gotcher (<3:45 1500) has overtrained.
