So if Solinsky always trains at 5:40ish, does he ever take days off/recovery days?

He doesn't train at 5:40 pace. I have seen him run at Nike a half dozen times doing longer type runs and Badger miles (7 min pace) still seem to be the norm for a lot of his runs. How do i know? Well, if i am running 6:40 pace and pass him....you do the math.

I'm not sure that people who focus on training pace get the point.

The real question you should ask is, what's the goal of this training session, and am I achieving the goal?

If the goal is to get in miles, some aerobic base, and easy recovery, then it probably doesn't matter much to someone of that caliber whether the pace is 5:40 or 6:40. Hence why his teammates don't all train with him at these paces. Hence the Kenyan shuffle etc.

But for too many people, like most D1 runners (thanks anways "info"), it's an ego thing. If I'm faster than him, my easy runs should be faster. If I train at 6:45s, I won't get as good as the guys who train at 6:10s. It's all a fallacy.

Please could you explain what "Badger" miles are?

Badgers miles means that all non workout runs were said to be done at 7:00 pace. So if Solinsky wanted to run a 10 miler, he would run for 1:10:00. In reality he would of covered 2 - 3 miles more.

The evidence is right there in your post. He trains at 5:40 pace because it's somewhat challenging, gets him in good shape, and allows him to complete whatever workouts he does week to week. It's probably not a total jog, but clearly he can recover from it and sustain his workload for months at a time.

So he doesn't run 5:00 pace every day because that would be too hard. He would have to sacrifice something else and his training would be worse than it is now. So the answer to your (stupid) question is that he doesn't run 5:00 pace on his regular runs for the same reason he doesn't run 4:30 or 4:20 pace: because it's too hard for him.
