Actuality: Pre ran close to the front, always maintaining an ideal position, and running up front when his time called for it.

Pre was a front runner, just not the front runner everyone thought he was.

After his Sophomore year, Pre was much further out front and that's what most people base their assumptions of him on, but in a race that matter, pushing the pace only led him to getting run down by 3 others.

Um, no he didn't.

i think Pre was more like 80-90mpw

he did pull ups and sit ups and otherwise he may have been kind of a douche who drank too much (too bad we didnt get to know him though)

agreed. as i said before, there's a difference between going out hard like Pre and running a nearly all-out 400m like a reckless 12 year olds do when they sprint the opening 1/2 mile of a local 5k road race out in front of the leaders and then start jogging. that's just reckless and dumb.

the whole balls to the walls flat-out thing is just all dramatic for the movies. it's great motivation, but remember PRE had a VO2 of 84 so it's not like if anyone had his pain threshold they could do what he did, Pre may have in some cases been able to beat his competitors because of his mental edge and pain threshold but it's not like the guy has no ability - his VO2 was like 84

The concept of the idea may be great and all, but strategically for him it's probably not the best plan if he wants to PR.

But hey, if he keeps this up, instead of dying after the mile mark... he may die later and later in the race, which may lead to PRs... who knows.

Did anyone see the moment in "The Long Green Line" where Joe Newton says something to the effect of "race as hard as you can & for as long as you can, that's how you get faster." WTF? He says this--in praise--to a kid who was "up front" with the fast runners at the 2 mile mark (then dies out).

I don't know, it sounds like the Newton kid ran out his VO2 max & had nothing left. Not too smart. But, that's Newton who has 150+ kids on his team & lots to choose from. It's a little different story when you only have 30 kids to choose from.

Whats your best 5k waffle? But either way this Team mate is trying to do his very best, more then what some people do.

I've heard stories that this is what Jerry Lawson use to do. Stick with the leasders every weekend till he got spit out the back. Then eventually he was able to hang with the big boys.

Or you can fall behind early because it gives you more time to catch up.

I'd say a few HS kids could cover the last .11 or so in 26-27 seconds but they probably dogged it over the previous three miles. I think 30 - 35 is more likely, especially for the 17:50 guy.

Let's put a little bit of thought into this. 20 seconds for a tenth of a mile equals 200 second (3:20) mile pace. Do you think that a 17-18 minute 5K guy is finishing his race with a sub 25 200?

Maybe he's a natural 800 guy.

His logic may be a bit flawed, but he's in high school and it's early in the season. A guy's gotta know his limitations and the only way to find out what they are is to hit them a few times. Nobody races smart all the time at that age.

When you get to the end of the season and he's still hitting the wall and dragging in then it's time for the "man, you need to hold back a bit at the start so you can hold position at the end, the team needs the points" talk.

As long as he doesn't insist on driving like Pre

Like anyone else, he needs to learn to live within his means. Best results come from fastest EVEN pace,(whatever that happens to be) you can maintain through the entire race distance until you kick.

I don't think Pre would approve of habitually running a race in such a manner that your inferiors consistently kicked your butt.

This guy is like someone who habitually blows through half his monthly paycheck in the first week, in hopes that one day he'll wake up rich. Again, best results come from realistic, if ambitious pacing, not from wishful thinking and waiting for the perfect wave.
