i think alan could definitely be close to 2007 form next year. i certainly think he'll be at least 1:45/3:31 type guy next year.

2012/2013 i think he will significantly lower his mid-D PR's. after that i could see him becoming a 15/5k runner and destroying his 5k pr and maybe attempting a few 10k's throughout his 30's and obviously much improving on his debut 10k performance. remember, he's been basically out for 3 years, and had a couple bad years earlier than that. so he hasn't had consistent good training for basically since he left high school. so he's gonna peak later than your normal pro runner who's had consistent training and peaks mid to late 20's. alan could very well have lagat like consistency in his 30's. and considering alan really only started to show what he was capable of for one year (2007) ya gotta know he's capable of far surpassing anything he's done before.

i could easily see him finishing out his career with 3:27/28 and 3:44 type mid-D stuff with 12:50/26:xx type distance stuff over the next 4 to 6 years. all he's got to do is stay healthy.

i'm really surprised people are counting him out. he's the most talented american mid-d/distance runner ever, he's been injured for a few years, can't wait to get back, and is in a better running environment than he's ever been in. and he's only 27. in what way does that spell that somehow he's magically lost his talent or is over the hill? if he was 32 now that'd be one thing, but i don't see why by the end of next year or 2012 he won't be ready to pick up right where he left off in 2007. i wouldn't be surprised to see his 1500 PR drop a full second as soon as he gets back in top form with at least a year of good training under him.

HAHA. Seriously though, I wouldn't expect a pile of gold medals. All the talent and optimal conditions in the world aren't necessarily going to result in all those runners coming through when it counts. That's just how it goes. But I think at least one or two of those guys will surprise the world in 2011 and 2012.

Rupp is not the 4th fastest American ever at 5k. He's actually the 7th, and more importantly the 5th fastest active US 5k runner. I'm not saying that isn't good, but he's not some EPIC ALL-TIME TALENT like people love to say. He's the equivalent, in the US 5k all-time, of David Krummenacker in the US 1500m all-time. Except not really because Krum won some serious titles... Krum was also one of the very best while he was running.

Rupp, on the other hand, CAN'T run the 5k at national championships because he would get tooled on by the 4 guys significantly better than him. So far Rupp has only won national titles in the weak-a** US 10k. I mean seriously, until Chris Solinsky took a tempo run the 10k was far and away the weakest US distance event.

People think Rupp is this amazing god-send of an athlete because of winning some NCAA titles when he was possessed of some ridiculous advantages, then for running a decent indoor (!) 5k (as if anybody else tries...), then for getting smacked down by a 5k runner in his debut, another guy (canadian) from the schumacher group, and a college kid in an American Record attempt that was billed and set up solely for Galen.

You may be asking yourself why I am posting this here. I am posting this because please, PLEASE do not use Galen Rupp's career as evidence that Salazer is the best distance coach in the US. The proof just is not there.

How is the proof not there?

Ritz in one year went 27:22, 12:56, and 60:00 while picking up a world bronze medal.

A. Goucher ran 6th at world cross and 13:10 twice, back then 13:10 was amazing in the 2005, 2006

K Goucher has ran 4:05, 8:34, 14:55, 30:55, 66:57, and 2:25 so far in her career. Throw in bronze medal at worlds, and high finishes in her two marathons plus US championships, she has proved to be one of the best amarican women this decade and all-time

G Rupp had one of the best collegiate senior years that anybody has ever had. With 5 national championships and running times of 13:07 and 27:10 this year he has proven to be going in the right direction to further improve on thos times over the next few years. Yes he is still young and underdeveloped but hell, if 13:07 and 27:10 is while he is still being babied then the rest of the world will know Galen soon enough.

Salazar is proving himself capable of getting people healthy and running fast, but at the same time being patient and developmental. I never said he was the best coach in the US, I stated that schumacher, cook, and the group in mammoth are in line with him. If schumacher was coaching webb and came on here and said that Webb is far more talented then Solinsky, Flanagan, Teg, or Bairu I think the rest of letsrun would take his word for it and get excited for next year once he is healthy is ready to race.

Well first of all the accomplishments of Ritz and the Gouchers are completely, 100% irrelevant to everything that I said. Secondly, who was Rupp running for when he had his good senior year? Oregon? Or Alberto Salazar? What does it say that we even have to ask?

Besides, in terms of all-time lists, and position within the US ranks, Rupp is not even the best recent UO product. Wheating clearly is.

It doesn't matter who Rupp was running for, it only mattered who was coaching him and that was Salazar. Rupp is hand in hand with Wheating. His 1:44 and 3:30 ison par with 13:07 and 27:10. They are both equally as competitive in their respective events in the US as well. On any given day Wheating could get beat by Lagat, Manzano, Lopez, or Symonds. On any given day Rupp can get beat by Solinsky, Teg, or Lagat. But that is a pretty good crowd to be around if you ask me.

Lastly Rupp is #2 all time in the 10k and #7 in the 5k. Wheating is #4 in the 1500 (not as high as Rupp in the 10k) and in the 800 he isn't much of anything in yet. So i would say as far as impact on American distance running Rupp is more of an impact since highschool and currently.

Somebody better check and see if Salazar is off his medicine.
