I wonder if the change in running style (forefoot) caused the stress fracture? Also, since he has had achilles problems in the past, won't a forefoot or midfoot strike cause even more problems since it stresses the tendon even more?
why are we talking about a guy who would be lucky to make the US championship finals in the 1500 for london? webb is DONE. He is 27 and for him to get back into his '07 shape, it'll take atleast 2-3 seasons of consecutive training and good racing after that 2 year layoff. Plus knowing his injury history, I doubt he can put together that long of a training block. The best we could hope for the "new" webb is 3:35, and that's after said 2-3 seasons of training.

Why would it take 2-3 seasons for him to run 3:35? He had a bad stretch, he didn't die.
Webb struggles here and runs a 3:41 after going out in 1:55

Why are you doubting? 27 is prime for a middle distance/distance runner. Alan Webb has surprised people time and time again. By now people should know just to wait and see. The only American that might have more natural ability than Webb is Wheating (Lagat doesn't count because he's clearly past his prime in the 1500/mile). Ritz was injury prone too. Then he switched to Salazar and runs 12:56. I have difficulty believing that a man who has struggled so much but still kept at the sport is "soft".

Gosh, I thought my injury problems were bad. I really feel bad for everyone who gets a running injury, but to lose three years in a row really makes me feel bad for the man.

Isn't that the truth-- I'd be impressed, certainly, but not surprised if he grabs the AR in the 5k (after all, his 10k debut was what, like 27:33 give or take?) in the next year. That said, the criticism of him (the legit criticism, that is) over the years is that you never know what you're getting. He's the running equivalent to Terrell Owens in that way.

3:41's a great mile time.
incidentally, don't expect much this year, but next year, he should be good. On the article: Salazar is pretty arrogant to think that he's going to "improve" the form of a 3:46 miler and get him down from there. Was it Pfitzinger who was going to run 2:08 after similar work?
I am not doubting, im just being a realist. I hope the guy breaks the world record in the 1500 cuz he's american and im all for improvement of records especially by americans, but we'll just have to wait and see for that. He is getting a lil too old for the 1500 in my opinion. early to mid 20's is ur prime in the 1500.
Why does everyone think the writing is so poor? I didn't know we had a bunch of English majors on the boards. The writer is a long-time writer in Oregon; he wrote for the Oregonian for 20+ years and now the Portland Tribune. Maybe this isn't one of his finest articles but I doubt all the so called critics could do much better.

Alan Webb and Galen Rupp are running on the Nike campus, as is their wont. But the two distance stars are talking amongst themselves, too.
Talking about upcoming weddings, for one thing.
The pair joins Joaquin Chapa (marriage) and Kara Goucher and the wife of Dathan Ritzenhein (pregnancies) as those in Alberto Salazar’s running stable enjoying major life events over the next month.
It could make a feature film. Three Weddings and Two Babies, perhaps?

Well, you have to admit that compared to the typical elite runner, Webb's form looked like holy hell, like he was muscling through it. Granted, form is not everything, but it APPEARS that improvement could be made there.
Webb's 800m and 10000m PRs are better than most everyone ahead of him on the 1500/Mile all time list so why should one not suppose that he could perhaps be talented enough to be a WR holder? Perhaps his form is one of the things that prevented him being that fast.
I would say at this point that Webb is a total wild card. It is very hard to be out of the game for 3 years and just pop back into it like nothing happened. On the other hand, if we believe his version of the 2008 story, that he was basically ready for a good season and then got sidelined because of bad luck, then we can't call 2008 a lost season (fitness wise) because he did all the work. So he had an injured 2009 and now an injury-delayed 2010. Webb has already shown that he can bounce back better from 1-2 year ebbs (2002-2003, 2006). It could go either way but I am going to bet on the side of Webb surprising us in the next couple years solely due to the fact that he has a far better environment than he did in VA.
Confidence has been a major issue for Webb in the past but I think things are looking up for him in Oregon. I don't know how it works for the elites but I used to get a boost seeing training partners run breakthrough PRs...if you are hanging with them in training and you feel your training is going well, a lot of self-doubt is erased when you see your friends do what you are hoping in your mind to do. Oregon is a place full of runners on the meteoric rise. I believe this is a huge plus for Webb that he did not have in the past.
Last thought, a few years ago many thought Webb should move up to 5k where he could be more competitive. Isn't it crazy that - even if Webb makes a dramatic improvement in the 5k, say 12:58 - that he would still be a dark horse JUST TO MAKE THE US TEAM? You've got to love USA distance running in 2010!
So now Rupp and Salazar also think it's funny to get involved in the trolling.
I suspected a lot of the things Salazar discussed, but am still surprised on the lack of sophistication of Webb's prior training regimen, especially as it relates to biomechanics and nutrition. As a world class athlete it seems only obvious that you would want to pursue every legal avenue to perform at your highest level. Anyway, great that AW realized this before it was too late and made the necessary change.
