I think its pretty obvious that he A.) didn't have the competition in college to produce such results and B.) he is peaking at the right time for the season...probably only has a couple races left in him.

Yeah, but Wheating ran 1:45.0x @ 20 too. Just never really went for a fast 1500m back then.

3:31 is not the doping line and he clearly did not come close to redlining pre kick in college. No one was capable of running 2:50 through 1200. This is a super talent in action, someone who just started running a few years ago.

Zurich should have some good rabbits and runners. This means that Wheating will do some more Euro races next month, I take it? I'd like to see him get in one more fifteen at Zurich, an 800 at Rieti or the like, and maybe even a 1k attempt at the AR, which is awfully good at 2:13.9. Are there any miles on the schedule?

It's more like the racers haven't been as talented.

I think it's a case of getting a guy in there that has nothing to lose. He's in way over his head, he's got little international experience, and he really has no expectations... If he does great, everyone loves him, if he doesn't, that's OK.

He got in a perfect race and just competed! Great job!

As far as Symmonds, he's good for sure, but can you really say the 800 meters has been a strong even for the U.S. the past 4 years... I'd say no. Aside from Khadevis, who's even been a threat to running a fast 800 at the championship level (webb, but its not like he would run that at worlds, oly's, or usa's).

His event's still safe for now.

Speaking of pacers -

Can we all just agree now that David Krummenacker is the best 1500 pacer in the world?

The guy hits his splits EXACTLY every single time. He lines up outside and bides his time on the outside to get around and just take the lead, then pull them through the required splits, rather than 1) taking off like a sprinter and forming a huge gap that no one will close or 2) taking off like a sprinter with several guys on his heels only to have them die off later.

I occasionally enjoy a fine bowl of Wheaties cereal for breakfast.

I think he is now faster than HICHAM EL GEURROUJ at age 20. He ran 3:31 something at age 20.

Actually it's a three second improvement from his mile equivalent.

Wait until he figures out that he doesn't have to run at the back of the pack until the last lap. Great performance but it is time for the top Americans to learn that you can't outkick the world's best when you give them a 15 meter head start on the last lap.

I’d say way to go Wheating, I said he would run 3:33 and he managed to prove me wrong by 3 seconds. Everyone in the U.S. should be excited for 2012. Literally Wheating has a shot to medal in London. Kiprop’s 3:33 was the time that won Gold at Beijing (originally 3:32, but screw Ramzi) and yes, I know there’s heats and such, but hasn’t Wheating already shown that he can run heats and such before racing in the finals and been fine with that (i.e. prelims in the 800m and 1500m along with finals at NCAAs this past season)? We may not even have to wait for Wheating to medal at the Olympics, possibly Worlds next year?

Being excited as I am now, I still do realize who he got beat by today, how he didn't race Kiprop, and who’s right behind him who also wants to medal really badly at the Olympics (Gregson). But today was an exciting day in American distance running. To whoever said that Webb is still the best…Well I hope Webb use’s Wheating’s performance today as motivation to get better soon and train even harder.

I don't think he's doping, he ran 1:45 his 3rd year of running then did just enough to win championships these past couple years, this is the first time I think he has gone balls to the walls lets see how fast I can go in a long time, and now he's just ripping. good for him!

But what about Webb. That guy was kinda talented and it took his years to run that fast and he only faster than Wheating by a hair now. And he's better than Wheating on all cylinders, except strategy. I am growing increasingly skeptical of Wheating now.

Are so many of you really that surprised at Wheating's time? Its getting on in the year so races are going to tend to be faster as runners peak. It was good conditions as far as I can tell. He clearly ran conservatively at Pre.

Above all, Lannana as much as said that he was resting Wheating and planning his season to start him getting swinging into full gear around NCAA and then through the early European season. Which means in short that he is peaking right now.

I think his time is about in line with what you would expect. I'm really kicking myself because I would have predicted 3:32 without being overly optimistic. But then I read all you guys predicting 3:34 or higher and shaved a good 1/2 second off the prediction.
