When you see this, how can you pick Wheating? What does this say to you?

Wheating is younger than all but two runners in the field and has the 4th fastest 800 PR? Some of the other guys' PRs might not be that recent?

You'd be an idiot to pick Wheating to win, but you'd be almost as much of an idiot to expect him to finish last.

No matter what, his participation is going to get more people to watch. I can't wait.

Why would it be idiotic to pick him last? He has never proven himself in an international field against 1500/milers and has the worst PR of the field. He had a tough double a few weeks ago. The only thing going for him is the home crowd will be pulling for him. He could get last and run 3:53 the field is that good.

Hopefully he'll run intelligently like he usually does. Hop on the back of the train and get pulled along to a fast time. He may have a good 800 PR v the rest of the field but:

A. It's a mile race, not an 800

B. Some of these guys, like Lagat, don't really race the 800.

Don't see his 800 speed being a factor in outkicking people. Even if he gets last and runs 3:51 or so that would be cool. It would be cool to see Manzano and Lomong get closer to 3:50 too...

I think everyone is forgetting something...most of the guys in this field have a better kick than Wheating..to say Wheating would win is just stupid. If it did boil down to a tatical race, most of these guys would run away from Wheating in the end. He's good compared to American standards, not world.

How can you pick Kiprop with a pedestrian 3:31 PR?

Also, looking at that list Lagat is so old compared to these guys. Awesome.

He has a better 800 than most of these guys and he wins his 800s at the end -- He has not yet been in this level of race but has to begin somewhere and in Eugene is a natural place. He could finish last, although often one of the better runners will tail off after they cannot hold on any longer, whereas Wheating will be in it to the end. Low probability of finishing last as a result. He could run 3:52 here as he will have the field hitting 55/1:52 and he will be at 56.5/1:53+ in the next 400 I think several will start to thin out towards the back and he might be at 2:52-53 and finish in 3:52 while at the front it will be 2:50-/3:46+ [Wild ass guess here, of course.]

[And be careful using the start finish for timing because the laps are 409.34/400/400/400]

Considering he is likely to go to the back and stay out of everyones way for most (if not the entire)of the way, what is the harm here? It's not different than Webb or any of the high school guys they have thrown in with the chance of something big happening, only that the chances are greater going in that Wheating will be able to mix it up.

Wheating has only raced domestic 800s outside of Olympic qualifying rounds, and as you well know only races to win, yet he has an 800 best that stacks up well against the guys in the field.

On top of that, look at how convincingly he just put away 1:45 and 1:46. My feeling is that Wheating is really a miler who is just better than most of our 800 guys at 800.

I guess my point is, I agree with Tom Jordan.

All the people posting that 3:54 might get you last place in this thing are nuts. Yes, lots of people break 4 every year at Pre, but has there ever been a mile race contested where everybody running broke 3:55?

Will he win or get his butt kicked?

Don't really see him beating any of these guys unless they really struggle. He belongs in the other mile where he was listed before. But maybe he'll have a breakthrough!

The thing is, guys like Wheating run to the level of the competition. Obviously he has a limit and we don't know what that is yet, but is safe to say it's a good deal faster than 3:37 for 1500.

About the time Leo was redlining for 3:36 to narrowly win over Brown (who lost to Wheatings training partner over a mile weeks earlier) Wheating was cruising in at Regionals in 3:37.

Thats right, Leo is in a flat out race with a great field and redlines to 3:36, while that same week Wheating is shutting it down to wrap up his weekend of 4 races in 3 days with the only objective to stretch it out a bit and secure spots in 2 events at NCAA's and he runs 3:37.

Leo then goes up against a stacked field with rabbits a couple weeks later and runs 3:33 in NY. The point here is that guys like Leo, Wheating, Lagat etc. won't run 3:33 in a race that requires 3:36 to win but when you put them in a race that goes 3:33 or faster they will show you their true fitness level.

There are plenty of indicators that Wheating can roll 1500.

The only thing that may be against him now is his double at NCAA's and the double at regionals to get there. But considering the talent in the B heat, I don't think they'd bid to put him in the A heat if he hasn't had some pretty good workouts since NCAAs.

I think this is a very Leoesque type performance. 3 of these guys made the US champs final for 1500 and only Leer was able to test Wheating at all here, but it wasn't much of a test.

Umm, if you read you first post you'd see that I already highlighted Wheatings career (hense the name HiStory) and mentioned his 3:54 (though I thought it was a 3:53). When I said "Additionally, Andrews and Manzano were already studs in high school when Wheating wasn't even a runner" this is true. The were training and racing on a team as sophomores and juniors (perhaps even freshmen) in high school. Wheating (again I already outlined this in my first post) didn't start until his senior year and ran without a friggin team OR coach. He had a coach who spoke to him over the phone!! Imagine your first year running, you have no team, no experience, a coach by phone and yet you run a 14:55 indoors then start outdoors by beating the top returning 400 meter runner in the state, over 400 meters! Ohh, and you manage a 3:54.

I wasn't saying he wasn't a stud, I was saying they were studs when he wasn't even a runner yet. The point being they had about 3 years training and racing on him going into college.

Perhaps you should have looked a little deeper into the history of this thread before you did.

HIStory, what in the world are you talking about?? Andrews was a freshman in high school in 2006. Wheating was running 3:54 and 14:55 in 2006.

Its amazing how nobody is willing to step up and simply say "I Don't Know" when it comes to predicting how Wheating will do. Because that is really the case. As far as I can see this is totally uncharted territory for Wheating. This is arguably not only one level but maybe even two levels above what Wheating has ever run at this distance. And it will be paced by rabbits so no chance of the race going out slow so he can stick with the pack without paying a high price.
