No, Centrowitz was tapped. Centro does not race for less than first, and though I'm sure he liked being a part of a sweep I guarantee you that out of the 3 Centro was the one least happy to be part of a sweep and not be the winner. Centros stride is amongst the most deceiving I've ever seen. He looks the same wheather hes going fast or slow, winning or losing.
In this race he simply ran out of gas at the end and if you watch carefully you can understand why. Usually he's up near the front by 800 and running comfortably (even off a fast pace). This race he got caught on the rail in the back of the pack and couldn't get free until 500-550 to go. He made a HUGE burst with about 420 to go in order to get to the front and you have to understand they were already at about :50-:52 second pace and yet Centro is blasting by them with a lap remaining. That is what came back to haunt him.
Great effort for him, but if he would have stayed up near the front and out of trouble during the middle of the race he'd have been tougher to beat at the end.
I think the 8th guy closed in about 1:52.5/53
Even my non-runner mom said something about this...I know its a nice gesture and all but AJ Let Andrew Win the 1500. Watch the recap(better version on nbc/cbs) as AJ comes storming in and then lets up as hes off wheatings shoulder checking where the other runners are located. Great race and all but if AJ did it just to let Wheating get the double then i see it as one of those situations where the superstar running back that blows his knee 1 touchdown short of the school record is let hobble in one more on crutches.
Acosta did not give Wheating the win. If you look at the race from a side shot it looks like he is slowing up, but that's because he was celebrating the sweep. If you watch the race from the front view you can see that Acosta's leg speed does not change he was just celebrating the sweep, Wheating was gonna win the race.

Oregon still lost the team title? Where were their distance runners? 1-3 is great, but last I remember, John McDonnell won titles.

It could very well be the case that AJ, who trains w/Wheating, knew very well in the final moments that he couldn't close the deal, so went into celebration mode early, getting a "win" of sorts out of the situ.

Do you remember when Rupp lost the Pac-10 1500 to Centro and celebrated like mad cause they swept?
Did you even see Acosta's face finishing 2nd place this weekend in the 1500?
You won't see Centro look like that, because though he was excited to be part of a sweep and knows it is special, he still doesn't enjoy losing that much.
Part of it could be that he figures he's a favorite for 1500 and for Rupp it was an off distance last year and Acosta was a darkhorse this year. But the fact remains Centro wanted to win to the extent of expectation.
This is not too hard to get, and it's not right or wrong for any of these guys, it's just the way it is.
And for the last time, Acosta did not hand Wheating a win. He was never ahead of him on the last lap and did not have enough time to beat him. Did you guys think he was somehow going to throw down 5 steps to Wheatings 2 in the last 5 meters? It was impossible to beat Wheating to the line at that point, but not impossible to see they were going to sweep. I bet Acosta didn't even know if he was getting 2nd or 3rd, he just knew it was one of those and nobody was beating him but a duck and he was excited about it.

Wheating is an American and a UofO rockstar. He matched a feat last accomplished by Joaquin Cruz in his historic double win. He was an Olympian in his 3rd track season ever, as a teenager.
He has an excitement that almost no distance runner does. He enjoys the crowd and the crowd enjoys him.
He's got marketability FAR beyond the average pro runner. Where Powell chokes under pressure, Wheating just proved he can rise to it.
While he may not be getting $750,000 I would be he will get as much as any distance runner not challenging world records.
Keep in mind, $750,00 was Asafas Nike salary, not his total salary. If Wheating has a great agent he'll be getting money beyond just Nike.
If I were Wheating I'd hold off until after PRE classic to sign a contract. If something magical happens there (and if he runs the mile he'll probably have a large PR) he may leverage up his contract right away.

Is that why he did the same thing at Pac-10's in the 1500 when he finished 2nd behind Centro?
AJ said that if they were to race 10 x 1500's Wheating would probably win 8 and maybe he and centro would each win one.
There is a good chance that AJ had risen to the point where he hoped he could and been happy with it those last few steps, knowing he wasn't going to get Wheating.
There is a different between wanting to win and being happy with less than a win, and expecting to win and dealing with not winning.
