Maybe the team is just that deep and competitive? Maybe he is a better track guy than XC guy? Who knows... I just think Haverford is going to have a run on this XC thing for a while.

Big congrats to UW-Platteville, highest team finish ever. Brought home some hardware!

I totally missed the results, and 50 pages of trash talk... Did WASHU win the meet?

don't look now but the goats just won a RHODES SCHOLARSHIP too. a team and individual national championship wasn't enough for the goats. Andrew Lanham, Haverford '10, member of the last four goat teams to compete at nationals -- including the team that finished seond three years ago -- just won a Rhodes. TODAY. JUST NOW!!!!!

The MW needs to be quiet and appreciate the fact that they already have a nice advantage. Nationals is always in the MW so they have to travel less and because it's there, it's usually a pretty flat course, which the MW teams are used to. Other regions simply aren't as used to those types of races. I think the only team that would have a right to complain right now would be Colby but considering they had their top two there and go 91, 149 they would have been contending for last place.

You just gotta go out there and run, and good job to everybody that did that today. Shame on all those who tried to ruin the day by complaining.

Please. Put this race in the west or the southeast or the northeast or wherever and the Midwest will still dominate. They are screwed by the current system. The current "Championship" meet does not include all the best teams. It's affirmative action for the weak regions.

No championship includes all the best individuals or teams. It includes those who make it through the qualifying rubric. This is no different than the Olympic Games, which limit countries to a maximum of three entrants per event. The NCAA system is a hybrid that weights the strength of the regions through at-large bids. If the number 6 or 7 team in the Midwest doesn't make it though, it's no tragedy because that team is not going to be a factor anyway. If your team is 6th or 7th in the Midwest then you and your teammates should go to work, get better and beat a team or two in front of you, not bitch about the system on Let's Run.

The West may be on the weaker side, but as far as I know (someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm going off of memory) they have sent at least 3 teams each year since 2006 (as far back as my knowledge goes). This means that they have had at least one team each year that was deemed worthy of making Nats beyond the "required" 2. Now, the South is another issue entirely...

I'm pretty sure any of the top 10 teams in the MW region are doing everything they can to better themselves.

A teammate of mine at the race said he bonked, and then looked like he gave up once he couldn't get going again.

All I was saying is that it is foolish to think that there are athletes who are untouchable when they haven't competed against people from other regions. Obviously Gossels, Cazzola & Mills proved that today....

I run for a MW team and clearly we have more teams in the top 30 than will make it, but who cares? No top 5 team is ever going to get left behind. If your team doesn't get to go to nationals, that's too bad, but you weren't going to win anyway.

So i just found out Salisbury's freshmen who qualified for nationals (was the 9th fastest freshmen in the country) never ran xc in high school and didn't even think he would make the team at the start of the season

he played soccer and ran track in high school

look for him to be up there in the next few years

Actually Ed, the prior system was much more fair than the current one. The current qualifying system is affirmative action for the weak Regions.

The #6 and #7 team in the Midwest Region would have been in the top 15-20 at Nationals and they DESERVE to be there.

The current qualifying system is weak.

North Central returns an awful lot as well. Losing Spain is big, and they lose Wartzler as well, but at the conference meet, I believe that 13 of the top 15 were frosh-juniors.
