Yes, you are missing something. As they say, "you betta aks sumbody."
Here, I'll enlighten you: Meb could have won the Boston Marathon like he did NYC. Meb tried to put himself in a position to win like he did in NYC-ryan never even was in a position to win. Meb raced in NYC, put himself in a position to win and it paid off. He did the same in Boston and it didnt, he blew his wad and got caught by someone who didnt have the balls to put himself in a position to win.
Ryan, we know you can finish in the top 10, that is great, you've done it many times by now. When a group of people start pulling away from you remember this: they are not ALL going to die. A few of those will hang on and one of those that hangs on will win like Meb did in NYC. Go with that group! If you run out of juice and fade who cares? We will respect you more for going for it!
I like how everyone assumes there's an easy, quick-fix answer to Ryan's problem... just run off of feel. How do you know he wasn't running by feel? Yes, he was using his watch, but for a reason, and look where it got him, a pretty good place to be if you ask me. To assume that he could have run any faster by pushing himself to be with other people, may or may not have worked. But you assume that he DOESN'T know if it would work or not. I think Ryan is mature enough to understand what a watch is for, and just because you don't like how he ran such an awesome result, does not mean you are right that he could have run faster. No matter what you may think, he probably wasn't capable of 2:05:50 on that day. Get over yourselves and realize that people need to try their own strategies before they can decide what works best for them. To automatically assume they should do it YOUR way is absurdly big-headed to say the least.
