OK, I'll let you know. I can do maybe a 6:10 mile when I am not in top shape. I'm probably the slowest runner on LR but I imagine there are a few others who have a hard time breaking 5:00.

And bashing Rupp, Fernandez... Yeah, I agree with you 100%. It is really ridiculous. My guess is that 90%+ of the LRC community also agree with you. Those who think that it is cool to knock a 3:56 miler (or worse, an injured kid) are either trolls trying to get a reaction or just plain vanilla morons.

My advice to you (and all real running fans) is to just ignore them. They may not go away. But at least they will have to get much more clever to get any reaction (and that in itself could raise the entertainment value of these boards).

Are these posts for real or are people just being sarcastic? I have seen countless posts on Galen Rupp gender jokes. This is the first light, petty jab I have ever seen towards Fernandez and you are that offended by it? Please tell me you are being sarcastic. If you are not then you perpetuating the stereotype that track fans are douchebags.

So what; when it really counted last June (making the team for Worlds) German got "dusted" in Eugene over the last 400 or so. The pro's are in a different world (2-3 years ahead, at least) If German is going to "get there", he needs to stay healthy and get some consistent training!!!

So the trials is what really counted? Not the actual World champs. And not the NCAA champs for an 18 year old who had no intention of running at worlds. No, the trials. Yah, I kinda remember Micheal Johnson mentioning that his career highlights was running in the US trials.

Well yes, the "ultimate" in our sport is making (and doing well in the major championships (Worlds and Oly Games). If people on here want to pretend that Rupp, Fernandez and other collegiates (last season) are "equal" to Teg, Ritz, Solinsky, etc. then yes let's compare "apples to apples".

Rupp has gone to the World/Olympics 3 times (2nd at USAs, 2nd at Olympic Trials, 1st at USAs), Solinsky only just managed to do it in 2009 World's. Rupp has been clearly better than Solinsky, and even has an advantage over Ritz in regards to times/age.

Solinsky is seriously going to have such a good year I think. Last year he took himself to a whole new level being able to close like he did at USA's and making the World 5k final. He seems to have totally transformed his body he looks so much leaner and his form seems even more efficient. He actually has a finishing kick now and not just the strength to close from 1k out. I think he's going to have a huge PR. The 5k at USA's is going to be nuts up front with Teg, Solinsky, Lagat, and Jager (who I also think will make another big step). Maybe Ritz or Rupp will run it too which would be an insane race to have all those guys in it. It would be awesome if there was one 13:00 paced 5k set up in the US this year with all six of those guys in it. That would be unreal. Maybe throw Webb if he's healthy in there too and see what happens.

Amazing! Rupp runs a mile PR (doubling at 3K on the same day), and the pimple faced HS children come here to try to downgrade his accomplishments. On the one hand, we have an honors college graduate, Bowerman winner, record holder and international level athlete; on the other a couple nere do wells. Let's all agree, those who can (Rupp), do. Those who can't don't. BTW, congrats to Galen Rupp (and the rest of the Oregon Project boys) for a fantastic day. A big season lies ahead for this group who are showing well for the United States.

Agreed about the potential depth in the 5k, we could see quite a few big PRs this year in that event. The nice thing is that by the time the next championships roll around, a lot of that talent should be more spread out among different events. It'd be a shame to see someone like Solinsky or Jager get left home come the 2011 World Champs because there are just too many guys running fast in the 5k. I mean assuming Lagat stays healthy between now and then, who makes that team? And in what event? And do Derrick and Fernandez factor in by then?

It does augur very well for Solinsky's season. Makes me wonder if he has finally caught up to Teg's speed. Neither of them has ever run this fast this early, have they? Assuming he's putting in peak miles right now, 3:34 in the summer seems attainable, which would put him in a good position to outkick anyone but Lagat at USATFs. Maybe even Lagat if he's not at his best.

this double suggests Galen is on track. At BIG we'll see what kind of contender we have on our hands.

I'm continually impressed by the trajectory his career has taken. He seems to improve and grow each year.

That consistency makes me think he must be the favorite to eventually possess the 10k AR.

He's everything that Webb wasn't. Not the most extraordinary talent, but a well managed athlete with a winning, long term approach.

I just hope German and Derrick follows the Rupp path and not the Webb path. German has unprecedented talent, but needs to be managed with extreme care.
