Don't you guys read other threads around here? German has been battling injuries for a couple months now. He's just getting back into the flow. We all saw what he was capable of off 6 weeks of training last indoor season.....
Germy battle injuries at nationals last year too lolol. What place was German in when he dropped out? I forget. Chris finished 7th and obviously has a history of running well in cross.
Remember that Derrick did have the AJR in the 5K before Germany took it away so Fernandez isnt worlds ahead of Chris.
In all seriousness though, I think Chris and German have shown themselves to be just about half a notch above Puskedra. I don't think that there is any way Luke can beat German, Chris and Sam at nationals but those three will be very interesting to watch.
Didn't Puskedra beat Derrick last year at NCAA's? And another invite sometime in the season (regionals, pre-nats, ?).

Everyone forgetting World XC last year?
So Koskei's just going to have a bad race this year, huh?

forest wrote:what? i'm pretty sure he brought up a legit point, in a weekend where puskedra and derrick looked very good, and imo chelenga looked just as good as last year, german shat a brick. i'm gunna need to see alot more out of german before he's a canidate to win.
he's what i think the chances should look like:
derrick - 30%
chelange - 25%
puskedra - 25%
german - 15%
anyone else - 5%
OK, I'll give you credit for your numbers. Not exactly what I would think, but not ridiculous.
Two things are ridiculous from your posts, however:
1) "looks like he might need to make osu's varsity before being picked as a candidate to win"
Might need to make osu's varsity?? Perhaps you are just using colorful language here and don't really believe something so absurd. The fact that you give German a 15% chance of winning NCAA (and collectively the other 6 varsity runners at OSU an implicit less than 5% chance) suggests that you really don't believe what you are writing.
2) "i'm gunna need to see alot more out of german before he's a canidate to win"
Again, perhaps it is just your writing habits but clearly German's ability to win has nothing whatsoever to do with your opinion and by extension what you have or have not seen out of him.
Anyway, I don't wildly disagree with your numbers. Perhaps just a stylistic difference.
But the real numbers are as stated above - 30, 30, 30, 10 (Chelanga, Derrick, Fernandez, Other)
1.) that wasn't my post dumbass
2.) if i re-wrote it "i'm gunna need to see alot more out of german before i put him as a canidate to win" would that make you happier?
to the person who asked about world xc, that is a completely different race than ncaa xc. they cannot be compared.

Yes, but that was as Chris was regaining full strength after a spring season terminated by mono. Since then Derrick caught and passed Puskedra in indoors, world cross, and outdoors.
Definitely Puskedra is a phenomenal talent but I do think that Derrick and Fernandez are both a half notch ahead of him.
Anyway, I have great respect for all three of them and for the others of this new wave of distance running phenoms (Jager, the big 3, some of these HS kids,...). And I wish them all the best.

Sometimes it seems like it. I suppose it is not fair to say 'everyone' but many seem to think Fernandez is just a miler, unproven over longer distances and over hill and dale.
Anyway, Derrick and GF are both awesome and should represent the U.S. well in the future. (But you have to admit, Derrick gives a way better interview.)

Your an asshole
It must be funny going through life not getting it. For you I have a modest proposal...
I'm really surprised that nobody has brought up a very important point. Has everyone really forgotten about how Fernandez finished 11th at World Junior XC, clearly beating Derrick, while dealing with a foot injury??? Come on guys, have you forgotten about the boot that he had to wear leading up to the race?
Injuries are something Fernandez has always had to deal with, even going back to his high school days, and he's always been remarkable at getting back into top form. The 30:09, while certainly nothing special isn't too alarming. Also, were any of us even there? How do we know he was going all out?
Also, whoever it was that said Fernandez is a 5k specialist but ran in the 1500m because he was going to finish 4th is a moron. His mile time is comparatively much more impressive than his 5k time, case closed.
I would agree with what most people have said thus far, which is, Chelanga is still the favorite! One bad race, not so worried, he will pull it back together. I believe Chelanga ran a 29:04 at NCAA's last year, and if you stretched out Derrick's 23:27, it still doesn't convert that fast (not to mention he was pacing for an 8k, not 10k).
To keep up this whole percentage garbage:
Chelanga: 35%
Fernandez: 30%
Derrick: 25%
Everyone else: 10%
Chelanga is still the fave wrote:
