Very well put. When you see someone splitting X, X+n, it's very reasonable to extrapolate that, with proper pacing, the same runner on the same day run a significantly faster race than simply averaging those segments. That is, going 30 seconds slower in the front half will buy more than than 30 seconds in the back half. This should be a fairly obvious concept to any endurance athlete. Wanjiru went through 10k in Chicago on pace for 2:03:00 -- obviously way too quick.

Let me beat you to the obvious question: how significant is "significantly"? We don't know, because Wanjiru didn't get to run Berlin. End of story. Anyway, he has many years ahead, and will probably be the first 2:02:xx marathoner we see. What would Geb have done for the marathon at 22?
