they almost always drop out, however they have the option to continue even to the finish if they want, examples sammy korir felt good and kept going while pacing tergat to a marathon world record, korir finished 1 second behind for the 2nd best time ever up to that time. another example is paul pilkington who paced the los angeles marathon about 25 years ago, got a huge lead and kept going to win the race.
