I'm in a PhD program in a lab that "regularly publishes in world class journals" and I dress like I'm homeless, neglect shaving, rarely change my clothes, and nobody cares. Actually, I think it is better to look homeless and have people notice you than the other way around. Professors will remember you at least.

You really aren't a graduate student. I mean, you probably aren't doing research, a thesis, and teaching undergrads. You are in a professional school. As long as you're (or somebody is) paying for school, they don't care.
Graduate students get master's and PhD degrees that involve research. This may seem like an old school distinction but if you're in business, dentistry, medicine, law, nursing, pharmacy etc., you're most likely going to professional school and not grad school.

I agree completely. I'm at a Medical School, but in a MD/MS program. There are stark differences between the med students and graduate students. There's only 8 (?) dual-MD/MS or MD/PhD students, I believe. But, as I said, the "T-shirt and jeans" guy fits in almost everywhere.
(I think the biggest difference between med and grad students is the fact that med students are in ~80000+ dollars of debt, while grad students (and myself) get a stipend.. creating a disparity in virtually everything.)
