Probably not taking a holiday this summer. I was away in Lanzarote in March and have a load of stuff to sort out here.

nowhere, haven't been on vacation since 04 and can't afford to. If I could I'd go to either the Gulf Coast of (southern) Florida or the Smokies in TN
Too poor to go any where. Bought stocks when Flagpole recommended. End of story.
Outer Banks in North Carolina for the first week of August. It's an extended family vacation. Anything good to do around there?
nord ouest pacifique natif: I will not be going on a vacation ... Every day is a vacation in the PNW.
Well then, non voyage!
It's great to be prudent but why do you have to spell out your savings instead of just saying where you were going like everyone else?
As I am here in the states for only 6 months I don't get any off days, except a fwe unpaid ones I may take.
So I am making the most of them over the long weekends. The trips are Florida (gulf Coast), NYC (visiting a friend), Vegas(the canyons), DC
Heading to Israel for close to two weeks. Out of sheer luck it coincides with the Maccabia Games - ought to catch some of that, and run in the open 5k or half marathon.
Two planned, already took one:
First one - San Fran to Tahoe to Santa Cruz, ran race in Tahoe, lots of fun
Second one - Vegas baby, Vegas!

You mean you bought stocks within mutual funds and you dollar cost averaged and plan to keep putting money in so that over time you can retire with some decent money? This is my advice. How does this affect your spendable money you could use on a vacation? It doesn't.

WHERE in the Outer Banks? Makes a big difference. Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk -- all busy and crowded but with stuff to do for younger folks (some nightlife, kiteboarding, etc.). If you head north to Corolla, it's still a bit crowded for my taste, but things aren't RIGHT THERE as they are in the other towns I mentioned. Now, if you go south to Avon or Buxton (my favorite parts of the OBX) then you get rid of the crowds and can just enjoy the local restaurants and piece and quiet there. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is cool. Take the ferry to Ocracoke and feed the seagulls off the back -- that's fun, especially for little kids if you have any with you.
Mostly expect to get pounded by the surf as it's very rough over there.
Have fun.

There are some CHEAP CHEAP deals in Florida right now. You can find decently cheap hotel rooms in Ft. Myers, and then either stay there any party or head over to Sanibel Island for serious relaxation (expensive to stay on Sanibel Island though; but worth it if you have the cabbage; I did that last summer). If you want to go to Orlando, you can stay at the Rodeway Inn right now for $29 a night! Damn! That's worth a couple days just to go hit a couple parks or at least find something there to do. Nothing special about a Rodeway Inn, but they're usually clean and decent. Going to Florida for the sun and fun, not the hotel room.
Off to Sunset Beach, NC tomorrow. Usually go twice a year. No better beach anywhere. Perfect family vacation.
Wedding in San Diego July 4th...San Diego always a blast. Summer's can get a tad crowded, but always nice to get out of the heat.
Bachelor Party in Atlantic City over the last weekend in August. If all goes well, I won't remember a thing.
We're staying in Rodanthe, so not quite as far south as Avon, but not as north as the other places you mentioned.
heading to Oregon next week for the National Championships with side trips to Coos Bay, Portland and some micro breweries
Leaving Tuesday for Barcelona and then San Sebastian. RT from Seattle for $660, hard to beat that.
I'm in the midst of a six month vacation to Afghanistan. I'm planning on taking 4 days of RnR to Doha next month (will be hot as hell). The g/f and I plan on taking a train trip from Wichita to San Diego when I get back.
Annual trip to St. John, Virgin Islands next week.
