The road race appearance money at least helped to keep 'some' U.S. distance runners on the racing scene. I ran 2:22 in grad school and then went to work. Could I have got down to 2:10 like a Brian Sell - probably not, but a 2:15-17 was reasonable. I had many friends who were good collegaite runners around 13:50 for 5k, 8:40-50 for the steeple or high 28s / low 29s for 10k... could some of these runners turned into good marathoners? Probably. That is why teams like the Hansons are so good today. if many more of these 'good' runners train post-collegaitely we will have a bigger group of sub-2:15 guys and then a few will end up running 2:12, 2:10 or faster. There is strength in numbers. Hopefully a lot of the college U.S. runners who are sub-13:30 will end up down the road in the marathon so we have a bunch of sub-2:10 guys.
