Interview - Keith Brantly,1996 U.S. Olympian: PRs of 2:12:31, 28:02 & 13:36

Not to knock the guy, but look at a 13:36 PR 90s Olympian versus 2009 top collegians: Rupp 13:18i, Chelanga 13:19i, Forrest 13:28, Mead 13:28, Derrick 13:29, German 13:31. Did I miss some? Wow.

Not to knock the guy? Sure you did. You overlooked the rest of his stats for a reason.

1500 meters – 3:40:00; 5k –13:36; 10k – 28:02; 15k – 42:50; half marathon –1:01:30; and marathon - 2:12:31.

The good news is that we have a growing group of good collegiate 5k/10k runners which could result in several marathon runners in the 2:07 - 2:10 range in upcoming years rather than just Hall and Ritz. And Keith was kind enough to do a career-encompassing interview. Just like previous interviews I did with Amby Burfoot, Ron Hill and Greg Meyer, there is a historical review rather than a 'current events' type of interview with these young studs who are still 'writing their story...'

He's a class act. My brother got to know him after he started focusing more on coaching and he said he's just a really nice guy.

As for his times, maybe they seem slow in comparsion to now. They were actually slow back then too for international comparison. He was more of a second tier competitor that did what he could with what he had. I respect that, not only because his marathon PR is at least 30 min faster than mine!

try clicking the "interview" button, friend. i first met brantly at the FHSAA state cross country meet back in 1987. as a kid from florida, he was one of my first heroes, and he graciously signed my state program and took a good 5 minutes to talk about my running. total class act. great runner.

Are we supposed to be impressed with his stats? The guy is part of a generation of US runners that woefully underperformed (with exceptions).

The half marathon and marathon might still make US Olympic team, and they were better in the day. In 2004, he might have actually medaled, crazy a race as that was.

Brantly was mainly a road racer who ran to win money. I don't think he was that worried about running a really fast 10k in great conditions with three rabbits at Stanford in May and then not coming within 30 seconds of that time the rest of the year.

He rarely raced on the track, like Bill Rodgers. I would judge his career based on the top road races he won and of course making the Olympic team.

He placed third at the World Junior Championships, won the Penn Relays 10k three times (back when all the best college guys in the East and Midwest were there) and had a 10 year career where he probably won more prize money road races than any American, and of course made an Olympic Marathon team.

Who could forget Brantley's appearance on Oprah were he blames ADD on his self destructive behavior.

Everyone can forgive "a mistake". Being a serial philanderer isn't merely a mistake or a lapse of judgment, it's a huge character flaw that hurts others.
