I spent a fair amount of time in mountainous areas of New Guinea. Met a LOT of incredibly fit people. There were even a few groups who had lean, small E. African type builds who were living at 6000-8000 feet altitude. Usually the landscape was very uneven and rugged, so I don't know how good they would be on the track, but on trails - look out.
It would be better if Americans figured out that if olur kids were active from a very young age and ew just let them play instead of putting them in useless "leagues" that they would be healthier. Then, when they grew up they could run 10K in 26:40 just like the East Africans.
