How can Ryan Hall be doing Tempo runs 22.5 seconds faster than prior to Beijing?

This entire thing is very vague. Do we know if he is just running this pace or is he training with the use of Heart Rates? Temperatures, course conditions, etc. can play a very big part in this. Just as an example of temperatures (and humidity) affecting things, it would not be unreasonable for a fair, not great runner, to run a tempo run (using heart rate)on the track averaging 5:40 pace if it is cool,humidity is low, and the wind not a factor. The next week it may be hot and humid but the pace might be at 6:10. Using his heart rate the run is the same effort but obviously much slower.

if that was Waynesboro, Va - that town is in the blue ridge mountains - probably some monster hills on that course - 2:25 would not do the actual effort justice.

Are you that clueless? It's because you put his 8-mile tempo runs at 4:40 pace when I don't recall him saying that's what they were. And even if they were that fast, you attribute the 22.5sec improvement to the 8-mile tempo when it may only apply to his longer efforts (15+ miles) which makes it not the least bit unreasonable. You lumped everything into a bunch of circumstances that you pretty much made up on the spot as you were making this thread.

Maybe, if he is dropping 22.5 seconds/mile pace wise, he is also going at a different intensity. Doesn't mean his absolute fitness is any different.

Ummm what? Where in my comment did I outright make the claim he does all his tempo runs at the same effort? I think you're just trying to be a smart ass and failing miserably...that of course is an assumption but based on the way you came up with the most asinine comment response that had really nothing to do with the context of my post, I say it's a pretty accurate assumption.

Ryan Hall didn't run 2:06 at Beijing, he ran 2:12.

Ryan Hall is running faster because he is increasing his training stimuli.

Is he wasting this fitness at Boston? Maybe he could run

2:04 on a flat course.
