For a far better movie that also got a fair amount of good criticism a few years ago, check out Salaam Bombay.
Also set in the slums and all the characters were street kids.
(BTW if the girl was after money she'd have stayed with the rich gangster instead.)
I thought it was fantastic. The cinematography and score were a great combo. I think it has to be a strong possibility for Best Picture this year.
Slumdog Millionaire = GREAT showing at the Golden globes! Oscar nominations coming out soon...
Spoiler: I like the movie. I hate the happy ending. The girl doesn't love him. She only loves the money. It is not a love story.
Did you miss the part where she attempted to run away from the very rich mobster guy for the boy? That's how she got the scar.

Exactly some people do not pay enough attention. It was the best movie I've seen in a couple years. It reminded me of City of God.
I didn't think Gran Torino was that good. The Asian boy and the priest did a horrible job acting. Clint Eastwood acted the same as any other movie he's ever been in. His racist remarks weren't really believable. He did do a good job with his character transition from the beginning to the end of the movie.
I still have yet to see the wrestler.
The Wrestler is the better film.
Slumdog Millionaire is a great film but the ending is a letdown, far too corny.
"Slumdog Millionaire" is far better than "The Wrestler." I was amazed at how much of The Wrestler consisted of...wrestling. It is a good but overpraised film. Obviously, I'm glad for Mickey Rourke's perceived comeback, but he was actually more impressive in "Sin City."
Notorious beats them all.
Will people please stop sucking Slumdog Millionaire's dick. Just because there are Indian's in the movie and they haven't been recognized for being able to make good movies in the history of the world, everyone is acting like this movie is god. It makes me sick. How bout this. "Who wants to be a millionaire was popular about 12 years ago. Get with the times Bollywood. Maybe the game show should have been HOWIE MANDEL. I am boycotting this gay piece of shit movie and all americans should as that is the patriotic thing to do.
loved it
It was good to see that Solomon Haile has a foray into acting with his role of Adult Salim. I had been a little unimpressed with the not very convincing way he played a high school student all XC season. Watching him play a murderous gangster was much more believable.
Another one who loved the film. Agree the kids-in-slum scenes were the best part of the movie; the adult-character love-story element and looks (Latika as model-beautiful in particular) were a bit hackneyed and certainly less believable. The dance number at the end was some nice relief at the end of a very busy, heavy movie.
Thanks also for recommending other related films and providing some Bollywood video.
Lagaan, Baghban, and Devdas are other pretty good Hindi movies (some of those got nominated for Oscars). Obviously they all have some "dragged on" scenes but for the most part are good/have a good plot. Kabi kushi kabi gham and Kaal Ho Naa Ho are also good.
Bumping this... brilliant film.
Hope it gets best film.
i look at the nominees and it has been a horrible year for movies.
You shouldn't look at the nominees to judge how good a year it's been. They leave stuff off. And if you look at the top ten lists of the "alternative" critics," you'd get the idea they leave EVERYTHING off.
I think it might have been smart to nominate "Dark Knight" for best film....my guess is it got no lower than seventh in the nomination voting, but them's the breaks. I think even "Iron Man" would have been okay. I mean..."popular" can also mean good. I also think "Rachel Getting Married" deserved a lot more than just Anne Hathaway's nomination.
At least one of the best film nominees, "The Reader," is actually quite bad. Some ad campaign most have worked.
All that having been said, "Slumdog" is exhilarating;y good and I'd be fine with it getting best picture.
Am I the only who hated that movie? I pretty much hated everything about it: casting, storyline, characters, dialogues, ending, music, "messages," photography...
I feel like Elaine in the Seinfeld episode where she discusses The English Patient--except that I loved TEP.
