Amen. Although his 8:34 is not quite as good intrinsically as Nelson's 8:36, it's definitely the best in HS competition only, and I can't think of a one-day double that even comes close.
Let's hope this is the last of the doubling. It would be nice to see German get a couple of chances to run some elite open races, then take a break from racing fairly early in the summer to rebuild his base. Forget about the elite high school meets, there's nothing to be gained there.

It's been reported that he will run at Pre. Hopefully, he goes with the mile(for exposure reasons and guys to chase), and then the 2 mile at NON. Scary what this kid may be able to accomplish in the 5K one day.

then he beat ritzenheim's NATIONAL record in the 3200

That's not a bad idea. And although others may be salivating at his potential in the 5K, all he has to do is look at Ritz to see the potential future dangers of overracing while still in high school. Run those two races and hang it up for the season.
I do hope that if he runs the deuce at NTN, that there will be zero chance of lapped runners getting in the way. It looked like quite a few would have been in the field at the Calif State Meet from the times. Did they run fast and slow heats?
I would think the USATF would give him a pass into the OT 5,000 based on tonight's efforts. I think the kid's earned it.

At NON I'd assume it will take a 9:15 2mile at least to get into the fast heat if not quicker, so I don't think lapped runners would be an issue.
4:00.29 and 8:34.23 within a couple of hours - that will undoubtedly stand for a very long time as the greatest high school distance double ever. Amazingly impressive performance by German.

Because it was a high school only meet you must also take into consideration one thing. German led all but the first 200m in each of the two races, then he was running all on his own. (Except when he lapped two guys in the 3200m)

it's a subtle distinction, but the 2 mile and 3200m record are seperate (even if the 2 mile record converts to a faster 3200 split).

let me explain myself, before i get jumped upon:
1) webb ran a 3:53 mile (strongest HS running record)
2) ritz was a 2-time footlocker champ over guys like sage, webb, and hall
3) nelson doesn't belong on this list. my bad. 8:36 2mi is the weakest record of a commonly-run distance (100m-2mi).
4) ryun ran 3:55 and beat snell in high school.
now, the fact that the 8:34 3200 was 2 hours after a 4:00 1600 indicates that he may be capable of a significantly faster 2-mile than the record. if he runs a 8:30 or faster, that'll be in the neighborhood of the strength of Webb's mile record. until then, though, it's "just" the best high school distance double ever- quite an accomplishment, but it's not a real record, and it's not a championship. it's kind of like running the best workout of all time; it impresses people, but it's not really a laurel you can wear.
that said, if he does run an 8:30 2mi, then i'll eat my words and admit he's up there with the best. until then, he's at least worth considering.
too bad he'll under perform in college and become just another sub-elite division 1 guy.

I'm not sure that you fully understand that of all the great high schoolers that you are talking about, none but nelson have run faster than him for 3200. He just did it completely alone and a few hours after a smoking near sub-four mile. What he needs to do is a 2 mile at pre since that is his better event, though I'm sure with some guys to draft behind he could also smoke the 4:00 barrier in the mile.
What was his 3000 split? What is Rupp's 3K AJR?
