The race was run in the heat of Tempe, Arizona and it was a strategic race. No one knows how fast Trujillo would have run in a fast pace race on a cool evening at another locale. The poster is an idiot who doesn't understand the relevance of on 10K to another is remote. The Pac 10 has some incredible athletes and I say all respect is due to Carlos Trujillo for an incredible race.
Good story on Carlos here. Sounds like he was rabbiting even in this race and decided to win it too.
Also confirms that Martin Smith didn't allow him on, and that the former women's coach Heinonen helped him for a while before Pat Tyson arrived and allowed he and his brother on the team.
Just goes to show you shouldn't be an elitist only coach. Recruiter, maybe. Coach, hell no.
I understand the 10k at the collegiate level, probably better than you do. My argument was that the conference is weak, not based on the times run at the championship race but based on the fact that none of the runners are all that good.
Like I said before, it used to be that the winner of the pac 10 every year was at least a national title contender, and the next 3 or four runners were all going to finish top ten at the NCAA outdoor meet. Now, I could be wrong, but I don't see trujillo contending for a national title anytime soon, and I don't see anyone in that race even going to the NCAA outdoor meet. I could be wrong, and we'll see in a couple weeks. At that point feel free to revive this thread and call me out. I will come on here under this name and say I'm sorry and that the rest of you are far superior athletically and intellectually to me.
For now, if you are going to argue with me, please at least try and argue against points that I have actually made, as difficult as it may be for all of you.
I'm going to agree with letsbehonest in that the Pac-10 is a bit weak this year in the 5 and 10k, allowing a relative unknown like Trujillo to come up big and win the thing. This isn't to bash Trujillo, it's really cool that he was able to do what he did, but usually the Pac-10 will have several guys at the top of the 5/10k performance lists and contending for all-american or perhaps a national title - this year just isn't as strong. It's a valid point.

Thank you, that was refreshing, someone actually reading what I said. No one who has disagreed with me so far has actually taken the time to agree or disagree with what I said.

Carlos must be thrilled to be conference champion. Nobody is saying he is the next Prefontaine or Rono or Rupp. He is a kid that has worked hard over the years and has earned something that is very meaningful to him and meaningful to his school. The Eugene community is very proud of him. That is the beauty of racing---on any given day, you could be the one that comes out on top.
Can't we all just be supportive for once. He is an incredibly humble kid. He doesn't claim to be the next Prefontaine. Like the above poster says, lets just let the season speak for itself.
I saw him having breakfast with his brother this morning at the Original Pancake House. On the wall aby the cashier is a photo and article from his Pac 10 win. Upon congratulating him, he was genuinely humble with the accolades.

Yes, but it's a stupid thing to point out. There is really no good reason to point out the fact that Trujillo didn't beat any quality runners. If he isn't that good, we'll find out soon enough won't we? What horrible thing did you think would happen if you didn't jump in the conversation and point out how weak the PAC-10 is? Did you think Trujillo would be elevated to idol-status and go on to win numerous undeserved championships if you didn't promptly put him in his place?
You can't just congratulate someone on their performance and then go on to explain why it's really not a big deal. It's a completely hollow praise and you know it. "Oh yeah, congratulations to Carlos on a job well done! But, you know, he really isn't that good and he only won because PAC-10 sucks." Just pick a side man. Don't praise someone and then immediately discredit their accomplishment.
Apparently Trujillo, who was not even allowed to walk on at Oregon his freshman year under Smith, and later was allowed to walk on when Pat Tyson was the interim coach, who went to to become the Pac-10 champ in the 10K, has automatically qualified for NCAA's in the 5K! Good for him.
from the eugene register guard:
The NCAA automatic qualifiers are as follows:
Men:
Phil Alexander, sr., 200; Andrew Wheating, soph., 800; A.J. Acosta, soph., 1,500; Carlos Trujillo, sr., 5,000; Colin Veldman, sr., hammer; Colin Witter-Tilton, soph., pole vault; Ashton Eaton, soph., decathlon; 4x400 relay

First, I do agree with you that the race was weaker than usual. I've actually agreed with most you've said. However, you set yourself up for this by writing what you did.
Both the Mercado's who were in that race made the 10k at outdoor nationals and Trujillo made it in the 5k.
Agreed.
Interesting note, if Chris Winter gets in for the steeple (he's on the bubble) Oregon will be represented at NCAA's in every event from 800-10K.
Carlos,
I doubt Martin Smith even has any athletes qualified in the 5K for NC's, but if he does I'm sure you'll smoke 'em.
Great job man, you sound like a class act!

Ok, so I will take a little bit back. I will live up to my word. I don't think I should have said that no one in that field was making the NCAA meet, if I would have thought about it I would not have said that. And since I saw this thread revived today I figured I'd come back like I said I would.
However, we have yet to see about all of the claims I made, I'm waiting for the NCAA meet to make a full retraction, and only if those guys do something I really don't see happening.
And to the guy who asked me why I felt I needed to add this to the conversation, I'm not sure, I guess I just thought a little dose of reality was needed with all of the nut jocking going on. I didn't think anything terrible was going to happen by me not saying anything. Did you think by not arguing with me something terrible would happen? I fail to see how that's a relevant question, it's an internet discussion about track, not an international summit on globalization. I'm just as entitled to my opinion and as free to express it as you are.
And you know, I've met Carlos, I don't know him well at all, but I've met him. He seems like a real nice guy, quite shy, but nice. I don't mean anything against him as a person.
So, I'm still here and waiting for the NCAA meet.
So, time for one more bump on this thread. The NCAA 5k had it's prelims, and while I will give kudos to Carlos for being the only Pac 10 athlete in the race (what a sad day for pac 10 distance running that only one guy is in the race), he did not make the final. So, this is just proof of what I was saying, the races this year at the conference level were terrible. Anything else for me children??
