if you are moving in traffic with vehicles - you need a license and insurance.
"crossing the street" is not considered being in traffic, so "no" people walking should not require a license.

I sometimes used to skateboard in the street. Do I need a skateboarding license? Did Michael J. Fox have one in Back to the Future?
I usually try to crank it up to 50 when going through a 40 zone on my bike, just to see if I CAN get a ticket. I wonder how many of those they give out.
On a side note, some bike paths have a 20 kph limit, can you get a ticket for running too fast?
Cambridge Commoner, you're a dick! I'm so sick of bikers whining and complaining about sharing the road with them, yet in my entire life I've seen very few bikers actually obey traffic laws (or even attempt to obey them). The most common offenses are running red lights and stop signs, biking the wrong way down a one-way street, biking on the wrong side of the road, and biking on the sidewalk.
What light was it?

I cannot tell you how many times I've had cyclists bitch at me about how they have all the same rights to the road as cars. But let one of them suffer the consequences of breaking traffic laws and it's whine whine whine.
A bike is a vehicle. Hitting a pedestrian in a vehicle can hurt them. Not as much as a car but it can. We do not allow cars to run red lights even if there is nobody crossing so we do not allow bikes to either.
Ironically, a few days ago I was almost hit by a cyclist who was running a red light - on Wendell St, right in front of the Cambridge Common.

Well until cyclists really do have the same rights to the road as cars do, the cyclists are going to continue to whine. Currently, unless there is a bike lane, bikes are treated as second class modes of transportation.
biking should be encouaraged plain and simple, bikers should be cut a break -you fat asses should get out of your cars and try it,in a country where nearly everyone is fat, carbon dioxide is pouring into the air and we are dependent on terrorist countries for oil, biking is about the best thing someone can doand to make time, bikers run red lights - yes cops have the right to pull someone over but it shouldn't be done frequentlycomparing a bike to a car is assinine on many levelsand in boston the only pedestrians that get hit by bikes are those that jay walk - if you want to go after someone go after them; they dart out from behind cars and at intersections thinking there isn't a car coming (even though the man is red) and don't even notice bikesboston is the worst city i have ever been to for jay walking - big deal, but bikers should be cut a break toolet them make timeyou clowns in your cars, i don't have one ounce of pity for you that you were bitched out by bikers, you probably should have

great...now lets further discourage kids from riding bikes to school by requiring them to get a license.
GOOD
and I hope you get pulled over every time you do it. Assholes like you are what make the roads unsafe...and then you have the nerve to complain about CARS when you guys don't follow the traffic laws. Plus you do that garbage where you get all the bikers together and run all the lights and cause traffic delays.
GET OVER YOURSELF
Bikers are idiots on the roads. Nothing pisses me off more when I almost hit a biker because he runs a red light (when I have a green) then has the nerve to give ME the finger. Then he probably goes and complains to all his gay biker friends in their gay little shorts.
They DO have the same right to the road as cars do. With few exceptions in massachusetts they have all the rights to the road. Cars must accommodate them.
The failure of a car to do so calls for a ticketing of the driver. It does not excuse you from tickets or give you the right to run lights. You can't have it both ways.
I often bike to work too. I've gone through a red-light when nobody was around. I probably would have sailed right through the crosswalk as you did. And if I did and had been ticketed, I would have deserved it every bit as much as you did. Every bit as much as I would if I were in a car.
At least on a bike you don't get points on your insurance. So the car driver is already paying a bigger penalty.

yes, i broke the law so i guess i deserved it. but, i would have alot more respect if the cops giving out the tickets rode bikes. they would understand that stopping every 400m on the city's 'dedicated bike route' is a pretty inefficent method of getting around.
we are living in a world that needs to rely less on being in a car. the laws need to favor those who don't use cars, not those who do.
You sound like one of the saved. congratulations. Trying to change this society is like trying to make bricks float in water.

While pedestrians can get hit by bikes while jaywalking, when I've seen it happen it's when bikes are running red lights, which they do all the time. If you want rights on the road, start by following traffic laws. Because as far as I know and have been taught my whole life...a bike is a car when it's on the roads and should follow the same traffic laws a car follows.
WRONG -how many pedestrians died as a result of a biker hitting someone? not manynow how many people died as a result of a car hitting someone, or a car hitting another carwhat makes the roads unsafe is cars, there is no arguing with thatget out of your car and actually do something good for the environment and for yourself and for all pedestrians and bike to worki am runner, i don't bike for enjoyment or as a means of exercisei bike because it is the most sensible way to get around

you are correct that bikes have the rights but in many times, you cannot assert that right. for example, on a 2 lane road, a biker should be able to actually ride in the traffic lane. would i actually do this? no, i would be killed. instead, when the shoulder is full of garbage cans and lawn waste, i ride on the sidewalk.
am i breaking the law? yes. but, my only alternative is to not bike on that road. but hey, i have the same rights as motorists right? in theory maybe but in practice, no way.
i really think it's hard to understand this perspective until your bike is your only means of transportation for a while.
you think a bike is the same as a car on the road? saying something and having it be true are two different thingswhich would you rather get hit with a bike or a car?as far as that goes, which one is likely to be more aware of pedestrians (less likely to be talking on cell phones, better stopping distance, no radio) - a car driver or a biker?

Actually I take the T
I rarely use my car except for during the spring, summer, and fall when I have to move it once a week. I use it mostly for leaving the city or state.
I get into fights with a kid on my xc team all the time. He is one of those bikers that thinks he doesn't have to stop at lights and all that garbage. It pisses me off so much because they put other in danger. Just wait at the red light? Oh my god, it's so hard to stop your bike and start again? I always see them running lights at the Mass Ave/Boylston intersection, which if you ask me is just plain stupidity. Bikers whine way too much.

I don't understand your argument.
If you are using the roads, you should follow the same traffic laws as a car. It doesn't matter if you aren't the same, it is just safer for everyone involved. So you have to come to a stop then start pedaling again at a red light? Man up. Take the T if it's such a problem, it runs on electricity so you can stop whining about the environment.
