Really all you people who's best form of sympath is: Hey you should have been smart and made copies of your logs like me should just shut up. That doesn't help the situation at all, it's like rubbing people's faces in what already sucks enough.

You don't go up to a dying man who can't afford surgery and say: Hey, should have gone to school so you could afford better health insurance like me. Bad metaphor, but same point.

So how about being more constructive and have people start complaining to this ehost site to retrieve this stuff.

I just sent an e-mail to the ehostingbiz.com, I told them I want answers and the data. More people should e-mail them.

Branton, are you out there? Please tell us that you are still fighting for that data. To some of us that was our only record and we trusted the site to keep it for us. Whether we were right or wrong to do so, as users of your site we deserve a fight. Please let us know what else we can do.

Running is my life... That log, wasn't just "what I ran, or how fast I ran it" Well I mean, it was, but it was more than that... It was my thoughts, hopes and dreams (a little cliche but whatever, it was)Now that the site is gone, that was 3 years of my life pretty much down the drain...

Hey jackass (and the others that say things like this). Hindsight is 20/20. The simple fact is that backing up your data from running-log was not that easy. First, you have to be somewhat computer saavy. Many users of the site I'm sure were not deep into computers. They (we) have other things we are good at. Branton wrote a little program that would download your data but you would think that he would have something on his front page with a direct link to it. NO. You actually had to read through the forums to find the post that talked about it and told you where you could download it. Most people didn't use the forums. The site was simply for recording a run. For most non-technical people this is not an easy thing to do so these members simply put trust in the system.

You people are such dicks - here is another analogy for you: people die all the time because of stupid mistakes doctors make. It's sad but it happens all the time and if you don't know this then you're hiding from reality. So, will you call a person that dies on an operating table stupid because they didn't go to med school or do weeks of research for themselves before going into surgery? The point simply is that each one of us puts our trust in systems all the time and when things like this happen you don't call people stupid because they didn't prepare for the worse.

If anyone is stupid it would be the people like you. In addition, the bottom line is Branton is to be blamed here. It was his responsibility to EITHER: 1) Make sure there were backups of the site's data or 2) LET PEOPLE KNOW HE WAS NOT DOING THIS AND THAT THEY SHOULD MAKE WEEKLY BACKUPS OF THEIR DATA!!! No one should think of Branton as a saint because he had a free site out there. The fact is that if he said "hey I need to charge $10/month to start making backups of data" he would have lost many members. Of course the number one problem is he N....E....V....E....R.... made it known that he was not taking care of something he should have been. Think of what you would do if your bank did this... YOU WOULD TAKE ACTION AGAINST THEM. Maybe that's what needs to happen to Branton for not taking a "REASONABLE" plan of action in his backup system (or the lack of one all together).

a few years ago i kept my log in an excel spreadsheet on my laptop. like all hard drives eventually do, the hard drive died. i had about 2 years of logs there.

i ended up taking my drive into a computer store and for about $100 they were able to retrieve the files i wanted. from that point forward i started backing up my data religiously. i saved all my data files to a flash drive and then copied that drive to my computer at work. i also copied it to my computer at home as well.

if i ever lose my flash drive, i will have only slightly out of date versions in my office and at home.

i have nothing against online logs and i am sure there is a place for them as far as sharing data with coaches and others, BUT i would also keep a paper copy or another log as a backup. i have suggested it before and will again - use the david hays log. it is an easy spreadsheet and you can input the data fast. it tracks shoe miles, weight, has a variety of graphs and charts...

i do sympathize with someone who loses data. i also teach at a local college and when my computer died i also lost a lot of the materials i had prepared over the years that i use for class - power points, assignments, tests. fortunately that data was able to be retrieved as well. just by itself that would have been 100s of hours of work that would have been needed to be recreated. there was a lot there.

Somehow I think this was pretty easy to FORESEE. Threads like this come up all the time here.

The fact that it was hard or not possible to backup/download your data should have been the very 1st reason not to use that site.

Coolrunning, a COMMERCIAL site, not run by a college kid as a school project, just had big issues and a lot of people lost data. Threads were going on and on about that just a short time ago.

This site had problems in 2007:

What you fail to understand is the process by which members start using the Running-Log. Most times people do a search and see the site. Then they sign up and start using it. If all works fine then that's that. Who really knew that it was a site created by a college student? If you only used the site to track your runs then it would have been unlikely that you would have known too much about the problems. Judge Judy - if you were not a member of Running-Log then get the f*** off this thread. No one wants to listen to you try to make yourself out to be an all-knowing asshole that has so much advice after the fact. If you have advice on a disaster that hasn't happened then let us know what THAT is rather than calling trusting people stupid.

What you fail to see, even after the fact, were all the warning signs that this could happen.

Lets examine the signs you missed:

1. Regular threads on this site complaining that data is lost on commercial running logs where the site is being run for profit.

You missed the threads 4 years ago about problems with coolrunning, you missed the threads 2 months ago about still more problems with coolrunning. A thread about this just weeks ago was not enough to cause you to try and get your data backed up.

You missed the threads about Nike and RW's logs going down and data being lost.

With all these other logs having problems it never occurred to you that the log you used put out by someone you did not know might someday have problems or disappear.

2. You never checked into who was putting out the website/log you chose to use.

You certainly knew it was not commercially done and thus was likely being done as a hobby by someone. It then never occurred to you that the hobbiest might tire of his hobby.

Shockingly (sarcasm) the site does turn out to be by a hobbiest who did it for a class project in school.

3. You never figured out and never asked about how to back up YOUR data. It should have been a huge sign to you that the data could not be backed up.

How did you plan to get the data if there was an announcement that the site was closing? I suspect you just assumed it would be there forever. Bad planning.

You are right, in HINDsight this is all pretty obvious, trouble is, it was all pretty obvious from the beginning.

Every thread about online running logs on this site seems to have someone comment on these potential problems. You chose to ignore all those warnings and sign up and use a log you could not back data up on.

Your motivation for posting on this thread seems to be that of a sick joke, and your comments, reminiscent of a "Captain Obvious" comic book, are insensitive. Your feelings may be the reality of the situation, but honestly take a look at your audience, then take a look at yourself in the mirror.

Besides being an inconsiderate individual that has not given anything to this thread except for showing your ignorance to this circumstance do you have any advice for us poor "uneducated" people out here - you know, all of us doctors, lawyers, and people like that who have too much to do each day to have to double check ever move other people make - even if it does concern us? I used to do that with my children but when they grew up I did not have to watch over them - they did what they were trained to do. If you don't have something constructive to say then get the hell off the thread. You choose to do the easy thing - criticize mistakes - we don't need that.

The one thing that you don't know is that I did back up my data but I work with enough "non technical" people that I know what is common practice among computer users. You, obviously, have no idea of this.

I can only hope someone is as callous to you as you have been with the members from Running-Log.

Ya really Judge Judy, you need to shut the f*** up. You're criticizing people for not seeing the warning signs with the threads posted on this web site??? Guess what, I don't read this web site, I have never heard about this happening with Nike or Coolrunning or whatever. If I had, I surely would have backed my shit up. I had no idea it was run by a college kid. The site was reccommended to me by a friend, and on the front page it said that it had recieved awardsd for the best online running log from Runner's World some years ago. So it looked pretty official to me. People who put their trust in that site arn't stupid; they just didn't know that this could even happen. Obviously I will never make this mistake again, but I did not have my files backed up and the fact that nothing seems to be going on to get them back is pissing me off.

So if you have a good idea to help the situation, we're all ears. But otherwise, go f*** yourself.
