Letsrun should require registration to post

I would have one question: What would stop an impersonator registering with your name?

How about going the other route? All posters should be anonymous. Without identities, no one can be a victim of identity theft.

I would be in favor of a moderated board -- this one is quite noisy, and would be virtually useless without the search function.

I'm curious -- does everyone read the "Rules" they agree to, with every post they make? (There's a link on top of every page, and one below the message box when posting). Here are some interesting ones:

but LetsRun.com does not have to remove any content and may or may not agree to your request. The boards are mostly un-moderated.

6) You acknowledge that your identity is not a secret whether or not you reveal your name in your posts. Your IP address is tracked. As a result others, including LetsRun.com, may be able to figure out who you are and thus your identity may be revealed to others.

This registration issue offers the opportunity to reflect on the following.

The free-identity communication modality has one incredible advantage. It is making people understand that Truths (like the ones older generations absorbed mostly in written form) take a while to form and they vary with the number of sources and points of view which contribute to their formation.

In referring to Ryan Shay threads, someone mentioned registration for "sensitive" topics, and another argued that you can't have it both ways: the freedom to troll anonymously and the right to show yourself as correct and reliable when it counts. And how this very dichotomy results in censorship-like deletion of threads.

To continue the example (and to make a point related to registration )such deletion of threads should be compensated with creation of threads, striving to maintain the good or legitimate content which was flushed with the tasteless stuff.

Moderators and or Editors (who are registered by definition) could find the appropriate way to tackle something which is evidently brewing, and will continue to brew, as in the toxicology report. And in so doing learn how to make topics/threads troll proof.

And while I accept the idea that Wejo is to be trusted in his "take my word for it" it is not difficult to see how this approach will weaken the whole system of board handles/identities.

Because that's - and here's the link to registration - the good thing on a board like this is we (and anyone else) are all one and the same. Just posters. Regardless if you know who people are or not, if you train with them, if they are your coworkers or miles away in another land. We are all just posters posting, rather than readers only reading...

It is quite easy to find out who people are.

It sucks because Alan is one of the guys that has been around and tells his opinion without attacking others. The problem is you trusted others when there is really no repercussions if these 17 year olds try to act funny.Alan doesn't hide behind a name and has posted his results and pbs so hopefully he has registered the name and what is done is done. I do hide...Ignore the 90% of bad posters and the other 10% is worth reading.

Yes. There's an awful lot of crap on TV, but that doesn't stop you from just watching what you like.

Though I would, given the choice, prefer registration, I'd rather see l-run as a glass 10% full than 90% empty. Anyone whose primary criterion is a lack of meanies and miscreants, who's stopping you from fleeing to RW or Cool Running or whatever?

Isn't this the same discussion we have every six months? We haven't gotten bored with it yet?

Full registration boards are definately alot cleaner.

The posts and threads are, on the whole, more relevant and true to the intended purpose of the message board. Also eliminated are garbage posts, spam, and immature insults that make up a large portion of the material on Letsrun (lets not kid ourselves here... that last point is true).

I find that to find anything of interest, much less relevance, on Letsrun, I first have to sift through mountains of garbage threads and posts.

That's not to mention that a large proportion of the replies on even the interesting threads are just immature garbage, gibberish, or trollish pranks of some kind.

If Letsrun went to full registration, the overall board activity would duobtless drop significantly, but it's certain that the vast majority of posts that disappeared would be the irrelevant garbage ones.

I believe that almost all of the interesting posts would remain.

As for fear that some people may have of being 'revealed' and judged as a person by having to constantly post under the same handle... there's a way around that.

Create an alter ego with a different email account.

The alter ego can be used to post questions that, for whatever reason, you don't want to have recorded in the history of your primary message board persona.

That way you can protect the integrity of your primary persona (you can keep the your desired personality of your primary posting handle), and use your alter ego for posts that would feel uncomfortable forwarding otherwise.
