Rumor has it Stanford is interviewing former Ethipoian and Kenyan national coaches for the distance staff.

What of it. I liked all the characters listed so far. I didn't know they were kicking each others' shins at the Monday morning staff meeting. I'm just happy that, that Hitler Youth dude is gone and is now torturing the meth addicts at Oregon. What was his name, Mike Reily.

Jakki Bailey? That has to be the quickest ascent to a major D1 job that I have ever seen. I hope she is not burned out from paying all those dues.

Then again...to coach a sprinter in the West region all you have to do is get them to the meet and their in the final.

She was an ok coach. Worked Lambie too hard the first two years and was slow to change her ways until two sacral stress fractures pushed her to it.

She was pretty preoccupied with her kids and, in the end, chose family over the punishing school schedule. It must have been highly distracting to her athletes to have to compete for her attention at meets when she dragged the kids to all of them.

First, Gerard and Evans left of their own accord. Gerard was not forced out. He was not given more pay, but he was not forced out.

I don't know what the deal with Weir is. I have heard that the Stanford track program has lost quite a bit of money since the departure of Vin. He is probably the best fundraiser in the NCAA and Floreal is completely unable to match this. That's not to say that they are running low on funds for scholarships and facilities (Stanford is, afterall, a fairly wealthy school with many endowed scholarships), but they need to be aware of their costs. That's one of the reasons I think the team has been traveling less recently.

I think, more importantly, this may be the start of something more interesting. Edrick clearly has certain priorities as head of the program, but I can't see him staying in that position for long, even if the AD is a bit dettached, if there is constant turmoil and the program degrades. The jury is still out on Floreal - he may have some grand reason for doing all of this, but right now it isn't very apparent or helpful. Any misstep, and we might see Stanford seek out a new "Vin" that can raise funds and recruit with the best of them and rebuild the track empire to compete with Oregon, UCLA and USC in their conference.

Yeah, it's tough for Stanford to sift through all of the recruits who would die and go to heaven if a phone call were returned. At least that's the attitude. I think a 17th this year in men's XC could be followed by a men's repeat and, say, a 13th in women's next year, which should serve up a whole bunch of humble pie to Tegen and his prevaricating little doggie Vidal. Can't wait.

The recruiting arm of Stanford has remained comparitively decent - not with Oregon or Wisco, but better than most universities - with Tegen and Vidal running the show. The women's team will probably be significantly lower and the men's slightly higher next year, but that's how it works in the NCAA when you're up against programs getting a lot more talent consistently rather than suffering through a couple down years like Stanford did. I don't think Vidal fancies himself a national class coach like Vin (although Tegen might and probably should), so I'm not sure who's receiving the humble pie here...

It's interesting how the internet has changed things. 15 years ago there would have been very little, if any, light shed upon this situation. Now, the entire track & field world can know about it. It can't be good for recruiting!

Fundraising money at Stanford is put into a general pool. For example the money raised from the xc meet goes into the general athletic fund. The money is distributed to all the sports. I can tell you Stanford athletics is not hurting for money.

While the education is without a doubt "fantastic," someone choosing a program/school with aspirations of becoming a great runner in college or beyond will likely struggle greatly in the current environment. Would you encourage our top high school prospects to attend Harvard or MIT (with their athletic development in mind)? There are plenty of places to get a good education and many have coaches who attend more than two practices per week.

I've spoken to many coaches and high school athletes who were turned away or snubbed by Tegen and Vidal despite stellar credentials. Others were recruited late in the process. Despite this they are still landing some good recruits with talent and ambition and i'm concerned for them.

What are you worried about???? Tegen is one of the best coaches in the country and I have personally seen him take mediocre high school girls (5:20 milers) and turn them into all-americans at wisconsin. His personality is not the recruiting type but he is a genius and knows how to coach! If you didn't get recruited by him, too bad, he is still and excellent coach at an excellent academic institution! And wasn't this thread about the throws coach anyways? But you probably could have coached the stanford teams better and won that NCAA title this year by more points, right?
