Bob Mathias.
Blows away most all that have been mentioned so far.
Great athlete, but I'm not sure he fits the thread's request for greatest *runner* of all time.
If we're allowing field events, then I have to mention Michael Carter. Eighty-one feet is just ungodly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMVgbAgDSzgDon Sage ahead of Jim Ryun???? What???
He is not a top 20 guy all time in this country.

Not as fast as Ryun but I think Marty Liquori was pretty good. Rich Kimball too.
then I guess you shouldn't be posting; since the question was the GREATEST high school runner of all time; not the best 20. Nobody ever reads the threads or answers the posted question.
1st *Bob Mathias
toss up between Mary Decker and Kim Gallagher for best female
Milton Campbell
Carl Lewis (was 26+ long jumper in HS)
William Reed
Obea Moore
Allison Filex
Sanya Richards
Marion Jones
Jim Ruyan
Gerry
Robin Campbell
Skeets
I think Jordan Hassay will break every distance before she graduates.

there was a high school runner around the same era of pre from the east coast by the name of art dulong...dont overlook him. he's legit.
Way to stick up for the Holy Cross guys.
Dulong graduated HS three years prior to Pre....more a contemporary of Ryun than Pre and not nearly as good as either.

Jesse Owens- 4 world records while in HS
Since Owens set or tied those WR's at the Big Ten meet I think it's safe to assume that he wasn't in HS when he accomplished the feat.
barret dahl. no competition for this guy. he runs a 4:48 and a 10:56. the430miler truly is the best eva.

How about you answering the OP or do you just come here to piss and moan?
Nobody has mentioned Frank Wykoff... won the Olympic Trials in the 100 in 1928, went on to run on 2 more Olympic Teams.

you obviously don't even bother reading any of the other posts either, or you would have seen that I did. You are one of those guys that are so anxioux to throw out your opinions that you 1) don't bother reading the thread correctly, and 2) don't read any other posts and then say something inaccurate.

the ontario highschool record is 8:00 flat for 3000.
Is a 8:40 2 mile really that good?
How about it....no props for Greg Anderson?
I would have to agree that Ryun is the best but I am suprised nobody has mentioned Michael Granville who ran 1:46 in the 800 (and 1:49 as a frosh).
Jordan Hassay
Gerry Lindgren impressed me the most when I was in high school and he was in high school and he beat the Russians. It was like boy hero saves the world.
