Lane Boyer and I think Bret Imgrund should be on that 2-mile list. But please don't yell at me for pointing that out.
I know this thread is about the guys, but have any great female runners come out of Kansas? I know a few recent kansas runners have been tearing up the collegiate scene.

If you are well versed enough to start a top womens/girls list, by all means do; I am not, however.

2nd guy here is correct. I was at that meet, watching my little bro in the sprint medely. It was a great solo effort from McDonald; however, Thompson attempted to go with him and died badly, the 2nd mile, finishing stiff as a board in a still credible time, but in 1971, not so great. If Eichner was not coming back from injury at that time, he and McDonald could have taken that race under 9 minutes, I believe.

True. Did you know Mills ran the marathon in '64 after winning the 10k? He finished in 2:22:55 (14th).
Ryun is the top middle distance guy out of Kansas, but not really "distance".

This would be interesting, but I don't know how one would look this up; but; what do you think the top times in each event, from the mile to the marathon are for a Kansan?

I'd have to guess Steve Fein has the fastest 5k unless Ryun had a 3 mile that converts faster. And Fred Tornedon would be the marathon leader too.
It is truly a shame that Brent Steiner was not able to stay healthy for an extended period of time. I would have loved to see what he could have run.
I agree with you about Lane Boyer. Last year he ran a 9:08 3200 as a junior. I'm not sure what that that converts to for a 2mile but I'm pretty sure that it would be in the top 10 at least.

Ok, I'll bite; who is the chick holding the track spikes on the Playboy cover? Usually when you read the fine print these girls were out for track in high school, but hardly stars.

I watched about 13 state meets here at WSU. The year you won the 2 mile, weren't you battling the 880 champion, Tom Honer from WW? What the hell was he doing in the 2 mile. That is unheard of. I can't remember the details. How did you outkick a 1:54 1/2 miler; or did you gradually pull away so you had 15 yard space to cruise in? Like you said, 'a win is a win', time is 2ndary.
you absolutely left out someone. In a workout, and i saw him do it, he ran negative splits of 62, 203, 303 and closed in 57. This guy rarely ran and when he did, it was to drop weight. I think the fastest he ever ran in meet was 403. He would get these weird abdominal cramps which essentially ended things for him. (i heard TWilliams and ACulpepper would get the same things) Anyway, he was supremely talented. 20miles a week TOPS...I know because I roomed with him. He just quit his soph year because of the stitch thing. Anyway, his name was Joshua Mikaeliss. This guy would have/could have been one of the alltime Kansas greats. In my mind he always will be.

Ok, against my better judgement, I\'ll bite. This guy ran at what high school and what college and where did he run a 4:03 mile? And, lastly, was he a Kansan?

I think Tom Honer thought he could pick up a second gold medal in the 2 mile. After all he was the defending state chanpion in XC. But then again, I think he caught the perfect conditions in XC. Very muddy course, 5th race of the day, 15 guys closely bunched with 600m to go, it truned into a kickers race and Honer won. Jim Gifford was the toughest guy and problably would have won on a normal course.
Two mile track I thought we'd go out fast and we did not. Honer wanted a slow kickers pace I guess. I ran 4:47 through the mile, knew I had to make them start to hurt so I ran 73, 73, 70 and 70 second mile for a 9:33(4:47/4:46). Actually I problably ran 66 or 67 from 600m to 200m to get away from Honer and Jim Scott among others. I was not a kicker. They let me go and I took the race.
My memories of running State at Wichita, were how hot that damn track was and the astro turf football field (for warming up and striding, -was even hotter). I remember pulling off my spikes right after the mile cause my soles were on fire; big mistake. lol. That was when they ran the 2 mile Saturday morning, then you had to double back in the mile a few hours later. I think they moved the 2 mile to Friday night a few years after I graduated.

No duh! it was like running in a hot skillet. Do they still hold the state meet there at WSU all these years or did they start moving it around?
It is always held at WSU. Also this year will be the first year back to the 3200 on Friday night. I can't say if they did that in the late 70's or 80's.
In 1975 I ran the two mile on Friday night...I am glad they are going back to that set up...
