yeah, if you run sub2 off of two weeks of training you're dead to me.
First off, to clarify, it's only one week of training.
Second, why would he be dead to you?
Third, who cares if they were dead to you?

I predict he's going to run 2:03 - that straights/curves workout didn't look too promising.
He really got the short end of the stick on this bet - if you break 2, you're going to really have had to earn your Peruvian chicken dinner. If you don't, not only will you have to pay for the dinner, you're going to be hurting physically from your effort and mentally from your bruised pride. Best of luck!
I agree with the above post that it's a bum bet and it's going to be tough, if not all-together impossible, to break 2. It's going to be funny if I do it or not and it might even give me a jump start to train through the winter and then we can make the same bet in the spring and I can try for a sub4:20 mile or something. A bunch of friends are going to be there who are all runners (some who still compete as professionals) and everyone will get a kick out of it, I'll be miserable for a week or two since I'll be really sore, but it'll be a good story for friends back home at Thanksgiving. Plus, I got to take an ice bath in my apartment last night after a pathetic "workout," who wouldn't want to do that?
I'm surprised people aren't asking to take part. We can even video-tape it and put it on youtube and compare.

The reason I wrote that tonque in cheek post was to respond to the guy that said
"The only rule is that it has to be done off a week of "practice." Basically, it's only cool if you're not working for it and you're going to suffer from it for a few weeks."
I thought his comment was bunk so I said mine.
Eat me.
I also don't think the OP will break 2:00. This was my experience:
While I'm a few more years away from my college days than the OP, I had identical PRs in college. This summer I started running again - 20 miles a week or so and most of it was 6 - 6:30 pace (I've kept somewhat in shape by cycling).
Ran one of those open local high school summer track meets and ran a very under control 5:18. My 200 splits began in the 42 range and I continued to pick it up to finish with a few in the 34-35 range.
I had an off/on summer of running and ran in our local Corporate Challenge in September. 5k in 16:40 and then came back and ran the 800 2 hours later in 2:12 (even splits of 33 every 200).
Even though I had a decent 5k in my legs prior to that 800, I don't think I would have been that much faster if I would have run it fresh - maybe a 2:08-9.
Could he? Sure. Will he? I don't think so. Will be interested to hear...shouldn't we be hearing something soon?
Who are you to undermine the rules of this event? He said one week, so let it be one week. I hate most people on letsrun, including myself.
I bet that this guy will NOT be able to break 2:00.
He won't. Jog around for a few weeks and want to go sub-2? Right.
Yes. I don't think that guy has enought talent in his nutsack to pull off a feat like that.
Or does he?
Been there... wrote:

Can't disagree with anything you said since you have experience with it, and I probably will end up running 2:05ish(if I'm lucky).
I think the reason this is really enticing to so many people is because you see races and listings from your hs state meet and people in your office talk about their 5 hour marathons and stick their noses up at you when you say that you haven't run a marathon, and it makes you wonder if you still have something in you. You tell people that you ran 80 miles a week in college and that means nothing to them, even though you went on 18 mile runs with the slowest mile being at somewhere around 6 minute pace, they still think they own you because they completed a marathon.
So whatever, I know muscle memory will get me half-way through the 800 and maybe I'll be able to close. Maybe I'll just step off the track.

whoaa, you can't step off the track. We've invested too much interest in this attempt/thread.Even if you end up running 2:22.We neeed a time!
Personal experience; best of 2:03 in high school in the 70's. Ran road races into the mid 80's ,mostly 5 milers 5ks and road miles.Took 5 years off , ran but no competition.Came back to run a 2:07 800. This year, 12 years later, on 4 to 12 miles a week,( injuries are prohibitive), I ran 4 800 meter races.Best 2:30,Worst 2:40, one in 2:36 and one in 2:35.The 2:40 didn't feel that bad. The 2: 30 felt like 1:41. Sucks gettin old.

I hate yourself too.
good luck dude. I love the attempt but I dont think it is gonna happen either. Wait till you see how dazed you are after..............oh boy.
Am I the only one that thinks he can do it? I once saw this man strangle a guy that ran 13:30 something. The guy never broke 14 after that...just sayin.
A baby in a blender, thats what you legs are going to feel like a day after.
Definitely don't step off...gotta start somewhere and having a baseline will give you some motivation to improve. That was the benefit of my 5:18 mile...haven't run a mile to compare since that one, but felt pretty good about the 16:46 and even better about the 2:12 since I didn't run it fresh.
Not sure what a baby in a blender feels like, but I didn't feel that bad the day after either one of my efforts...I will say that the 2:12 was done without spikes or even racing flats, so I saved some wear and tear on my calves there...
Just come and train with me here in SOCAL and you'll break 1:52 within 13 days.
