Footlocker lists wrote:
The Truth Doctor wrote:Here's a question - Is there any State that has NEVER qualified a Footlocker/Kinney finalist (boy or girl)? I guess I could do the research myself, but I thought someone might know off the top of their head.
No boys - Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii
No girls - Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Louisiana, West Virginia
It's tough to determine which state is easiest without knowing such things as the population of the state, the number of classifications, the winning times of the state champions in typical years, etc.
That said, I would list my top-10 easiest as:
1) Wyoming - easiest
2) Idaho
3) Alaska
4) Louisiana
5) Arkansas
6) Mississippi
7) South Carolina
8) North Carolina
9) Montana
10) Hawaii
This helps explain why the South gets its ass kicked at Footlocker every year, too. Especially the South girls.
Thanks for the answer. It's interesting that Arkansas, a state with a University that is a perrenial power in distance running, sucks so bad at the high school level. I guess the Razorbacks aren't doing much recruiting in state.
Georgia AAAAA boys is probably one of the hardest to win this year. They have 3 runners that have the potential to go under 15 flat but none have faced each other yet this year. Showdown Saturday morning at 11:00 or 11:30.
Delaware gave us Vicki Huber, but...that's about it
Vermont should be in that list.
You can put Vermont on the list based on the times in the state meet race, but you have to realize that their State Meet is at Thetford every year. I can't imagine many states use a course nearly that difficult. Plus the conditions have tended to be horrendous the past few years. Seems like every time I go to watch that meet it's 3" of mud the whole way (except the pavement up Morty's), or else snow. This year the top boys time was 17:35 with only 3 runners under 18:00 and only 16 under 19:00 out of 495 runners. For the girls 20:31 won it with only 10 girls under 22:00 out of 356. Not sure about conditions for the girls races because they were postponed, but the boys races were held in big rain, high winds, deep mud, shin deep puddles. The girls races were postponed because trees were falling on the course during the boys races.
Anybody think that makes Vermont easy?
Vermont may have a few quality runners each year, but the talent is spread thin. Division 3 this year the boy's winner was over a minute slower than Div. 1.
Regarding VErmont: Make that D3 boys winner was 1:30 slower than D1, and D2 was a minute slower.
Delaware has never had a footlocker finalist.
Alaska may be easy, but the state meet is the first week of October/last week of September - not much time to train for it. And hard to hold a peak to fl west.
I've heard it's really hard to run in the UP....look at D2's Mandi Zemba...she ran a 5:18 in high school running in the UP, then went to Grand Valley her freshman year and won a national title, running 4:28

Since it is an election day-after, I must point out that blue states are generally faster and deeper than red states. Certainly there are some infrequent exceptions, but most of the nations best distance runners come from blue states----this is despite the fact that blue states generally have worse weather.
Yeah the weather in California is horrible for running. And its just great for running in Texas and Mississippi.
Doesn't NC have a few Foot Locker qualifiers each year? (granted, it's the South--but still...) I get most of the states on your list, but NC would not be one of the 10 easiest. It's also a fairly large state based on population--maybe close to 8 million?
I remember Campbell County, Wyoming as a powerhouse a few years back. Not sure if they still are.
which states have never had some1 make footlocker?
