Hmm...
What's the connection between the following sets of times? (31:08-m, 14:42-m, 2:11-w, 18:28-w, 38:45-w) & (29:49-m, 14:25-m, 2:08-w, 16:50-w, 34:30-w)
I'll tell you! They're the pr's of North Florida's "foreign" runners (who scored 37 pts at DII outdoor last year) before they arrived at UNF(1st set) and after being there for a year(2nd set). UNF's other 10 pts were scored by a, for the most part, non-recruited American girl who ran 5:13 for a mile in HS and has since run 16:37i. The lone non-scoring athlete among UNF's qualifiers was an American guy who went from a 4:21 mile in HS to 3:47 1500m last year.
UNF recruits "average" athletes to develop into very good runners because the top athletes, american or otherwise, won't go to a DII school because they see themselves as being "better than that". And it's a really sad situation when American kids would rather quit running, or walk-on to mediocre DI teams, than take a chance, and usually a scholarship, on a team with a proven record of developing athletes! What's the coach supposed to do, give full rides to 4:30 guys and 5:30 girls?
