No... I'm married w/kids, working fulltime in another part of the country and trying to get back to sub-19:50 5Ks. It's just fun to reminisce about the old days.

Yes, I remember talking to one of your girlfriends at a meet... she went to Carmel HS with you. She was also a runner as I recall. Kind of curly hair.
Well, I only had one girlfriend in HS - Martha Knieriem.
She wasn't a runner but she did have curly hair at one time.
Sounds like the one... she was in running clothes but wasn't running in the meet, just watching you race (like a lot of girls there). : )
Why did you leave AZ State for Georgetown? More prestigious or better scholarship offer?

The ASU -> GU switch is a long story so I'll give the basic overview:
Len Miller was my freshman year coach and good friend. He also coached Steve Scott at the time. Things were great that year. Len had some problems with an ASSistant coach and a runner on the team. He fired the coach and didn't want anything to do with the "athlete". Anyway, the two of them brought up false accusations about Len and caused a lot of trouble. In the end Len left ASU and went on the Cal. I stayed on to run for another coach my second year. He was fired by December (although he was a great man, coach, and friend) - This was the XC year that I came in 4th at the PAC 10 and made All American in XC - so he couldn't have been too bad of a coach... Now the real fun started - by the end of the second half of my sophomore year there were 5 more coaches brought in and then let go... As crazy as that sounds it is what happened. And to top it off, I had to beg for a release from ASU... They gave me a 1/2 release but not a full one. It was sad - things could have been great there.
I, of course, was very happy to have moved to GU. The program was awesome as well as the coach? So I guess all worked out for the best.
What is a 1/2 release?
I don't blame you for leaving... did Georgetown offer you a full scholarship, or did the ASU mess cost you? Sounds like things were pretty crazy down there.

Well, a 1/2 release is where I can go to another program and receive a scholarship but will still need to sit out a year. A full release would allow me to start running for the new school that year. GU was great. I received a full ride and was able to take the year and just train. Actually, the summer after my first year at GU was my first year making the US team to Europe. It was an awesome experience racing over there. You kind of learn a lot - and I mean A LOT when you compete in the European circuit. Yep, the stories one can tell...
Like how to run a 3:57 mile?
Well, that too... I think it was my second trip over there that I ran my fastest time in the 1500... Although, I can't find the time posted anywhere - I guess it's a lost time...
Remember this dude Kehoe?
Is this your 1500 PB:

I found it on the site below. Most of the content is for members only, but if you scroll down there is a search bar in the middle where you can try and look up the best performances of athletes.
OK, if MS was all-America XC, now I feel a little less bad about that a--whupping in Yorktown.
And I bet "Section1" is Ed Kehoe himself under a pseudonym....is that you, Eddie?
yeah from looking at last year's XC state's program i was wondering y the times for that state meet up in malone were so slow. malone is the worst place in the world sooooo boring i hope they don't have states there in 05

Wow... I don't know how you found it but, yep - that's it. Actually, I didn't remember the exact time but now that I see it I do recall it being such.
Thanks.

I remember Ed. Is that you Section1?
How did you fare at Malone, Mike? I imagine you were in the "A" race... I know Collins and Smitty were in "B" with the JFK Somers guys (Kehoe sounds familiar--was he JFK?) Also were you on the "party bus" going nine hours north to Malone? I can't recall. Actually it wasn't such a party with some of those strict coaches and officials, including Sister Janet, on board.
Correction... I believe I do remember you being on it... but I was 15 and too in awe of the top runners to try to talk to any of them. I was an individual qualifier and pretty much on my own that trip. I remember one of the senior girls trying to get sneak into a bar near the hotel... boy, what a dive. The Schlitz-drinking regulars eyed up all of us teenage downstaters and thought they'd hit the jackpot. We decided we'd rather be eating bad spaghetti at the 'Round the World Motel.

I remember O.J. Kastberg being highly competitive in that era, ran good x-c and steeple/ went to Penn ran 2:24 at 1000m
