I think in Chock's case she should have stayed in college and not taken that $15-20,000 salary. She missed out on the college experience for barely making enough money to survive and is now lost in the sport. Nike took her out of college for what? So they MIGHT make something out of her. And, since they ruined her, now what?
She'll wash out the bottom of the porn industry, like everyone else in Hollywood.

We predicted it.
I agree. I don't believe she's even in Portland anymore. I think Kara Goucher stated in an interview recently that she "used" to train with Chock but that Chock was very inconsistent and she doesn't train with her anymore. I don't think Nike has a use for her anymore.
Chapman's aerobic approach to training milers is very interesting. Surprising that they always ran better indoors than outdoors, when I would expect the opposite, from this training approach.
Also, how do you keep the brakes on these guys, running 200's in 32, when milers want to spike up and run 24's?
Sidenote: Jefferson's have great natural speed, and great short kick (last 150).
It seemed like the Jeffersons were at IU forever, and the greater part of their success came early on and indoors. John especially seemed like he was always hurt the last few years, and injuries got the best of both of them in what should have been their last year of eligibility.
Favorite memories (apologies in advance for minor lapses in accuracy): the Pre-like moptops and 'staches they sported in 2004, Sean being part of that great 1500 NCAA final in 2005 with a 3:38 that was like 7th behind Manzano and a bunch of others, and Sean being the lone non-Badger in the top 10 of the 2005 Big 10 XC (there's a great picture somewhere of him looking alone and forlorn in the Victory Stand lineup).
Good luck to them both in Oregon.
Bottom line is that these guys used Chapman and bolted. They were so extremely inconsistent it was ridiculous. I don't think it was training as much as just not caring sometimes. That is not a good thing in the post-collegiate.
those big ten pics, some nice facial hair throughout this meet.

a few things about the jeffersons and injuries.
1) these guys had only each other to train with. they did not train with haas
2) girlfriends played a role
3) chapman is not the man to coach sub 4-minute milers.
4) there is more untapped potential here than in any other miler in the nation.
5) both these guys have outkicked willis in the final 200 of a mile.
sean has also run 1344 or something, like 4 years ago. john ran just over 14 as a freshman.
these guys raced only 3 800's their entire career. is that mile training? noooo.
you'll see great things.
Thanks for those pics! #347 is the one of Sean on the victory stand.
a lot of hansons get better deals than that and they don't come near to the caliber of athlete the jefferson's are. if anything they J's should be getting more money.
everyone who says the jefferson twins are not worth 25k/year needs to wake up. please realize that 25k per year is absolutely pocket change for nike. nike probably makes 25k in a few days to pay their salary for the entire year. lebron james signed a 90 million dollar contract with nike. repeat that again 90 MILLION. now think how insignificant 25k is. instead of bashing nike be glad they gave two guys a chance. the more US guys and gals that get sponsored through nike/adidas/reebok/asics/etc the better. a bigger talent pool to draw from inevitably produces better results. US running needs things like this to happen more often even if it is a very low wage. you only have so much time to run fast and it is good to see the jeffersons taking their shot.

All the Hanson athletes have the same base yearly salary. That being 0. They get free housing if they choose to live in one of the houses, travel paid for, and a bonus structure set up through Brooks. They get paid when they run well and get nothing when the don't run or run bad. The only athlete to receive any type of monthly salary is Brian Sell, but that is from Brooks for having been one of 2005's top 5 Marathoners. None of the athletes, I repeat none, recieve a stipend. It is all performance bonus' and race winnings.

Are a couple of those 800's the 1:58 and 2:01 they each ran in Europe THIS summer? Outdoors, their best NCAA finish is a 7th with John making a USATF final one time (2001).

Same here, but only when they featured flaxen-haired babes and the like.
to bootsy, I doubt if I wouldn't remember you and no I'm not Jim Sapienza. And the only time I ever saw Martin drinking a beer in public was on that trip and I'm positive because it was when he was at the table with Virgin who was drinking Cardinal and that's exactly what Martin ordered.
As far as this thread goes, keep in mind these contracts aren't "awarded" or "earned". I'm guessing they're carefully thought out and granted based on potential. And while 3:56 and 3:57 college milers may rank on the purdy scale (for whats that worth) the same as 13:35 and 28:30, if those milers have closing speed like the Jeffersons, I'd wager that those types would be a better bet to make any type of impact internationally, even if its solely making an olympic final, than a distance runner that's a minute off the WR at the age of 22. Yet it still seems surprising that any runner that wasn't really a major impact in college can come out and get that kind of support right off that bat but I'm not knocking that at all. And I'm sure that support will be quickly dropped if they don't make the team in 2008.
Does anyone remember 83 and 84 when just about every national class runner had contracts (and nice ones) and that all was cut right away after L.A.?
Not a very big investment for NIKE, to be honest. Phil Knight spends that kind of money for breakfast. If they don't pan out, NIKE is out 40K -- I doubt they're worried about 40K or so.
Also, good thing the twins aren't in Portland, with that kind of money they wouldn't be living in a very nice area. And if they lived in Seattle, they'd be sharing studio apartments.
I hope they make it, but trust me, they aren't getting paid much and this isn't a huge investment by NIKE.
But I knew a bunch of Let's Run posters would be jealous, that's like clockwork.
actually you do your research. stipend or "performance bonuses" it is all the same thing. the brooks contract for bonuses is one of the softest in the industry. the B athletes make out well on top of the health care from working a part-time job. please you do your research next time. thank you.
