It takes time to build solid programs and it takes resources to build any program.
There is a Spanish proverb who said it best, "It's one thing to talk about bulls, and another thing to be in the ring with them."

It's not hard to place well at the All-Ohio when you field your strongest team.....most of the MAC schools take their strongest team to Pre-Nationals that weekend.
I'm not comparing the Big 10 to the MAC...there is OBVIOUS differences....I'm just saying, put Ohio State women in the MAC XC meet the past 4 years and they would be lucky to crack the top 5 team places.
You are correct. I was trying to make the point that Kent, Akron, or Toledo cannot compete with Michigan without bluechip either. I won't comment on the MAC because I don't see it as a very strong conference and don't see the relevance.
Ohio State beat Akron two weeks before the Big 10/MAC meet at the National Invite (alternative to pre-nationals). 13 days later, OSU finished 8th at Big 10's and Akron won the MAC. The MAC is nowehere near as top-heavy, nor deep.
.?.
The only thing that matters is the Region if you are going to compare teams from different conferences. At the Region meet, Toledo finished 8th, only about 10 points behind Indiana and 20 points behind Marquette. Indiana was 4th in the Big-10. Toledo seems to always do well in the region compared to the Big-10 but they seem to be the only MAC school that is consistently competitive with the Big-10.
