Don't you worry about my situation, old man. But don't think I'm coming from a place where I have no experience to speak. I've heard loud motorcycles -- both day and night. I've lived next to train tracks. I don't think you have any special experience here that any of us can't relate to. And as far as making character judgements about me (as I mentioned earlier, this is the way that you try to win an arguement) you are wrong altogether. I'm not 'on the dole'. I don't live in my parents' basement. I'm not Gen X. What I am is the future that, when you are old and sitting around STILL bitching about everything that's wrong in the world (because you never had the balls to stand up to anyone when you were younger), I'm going to be the one cutting off your social security because the system will be going bankrupt and I won't want half my paycheck going to prolonging your breathing. I'll be the one legalizing drugs, pulling us out of these pointless wars, and redistributing rights to the people that made you sad decades ago because they had loud bikes, or were morons, or were foolish with their money.

I do not own a harley, took classes with the motorcycle saftey foundation, ride properly and all you can say is the ones that crash and the ones that will crash. Misspelled words: definitely, offense, safety, neighbor

The sentence composition and grammar is abysmal. Abysmal. If you haven't heard that saying about motorcyclists, you live in a shoe box. I suspect and certainly hope this guy is ten years old. So you have a ten-year-old mouthing off and telling people to grow up. This is almost as bad as the God damned Harley owners.

Before you get full-bore into biker hate (although I think it's too late) you ought to familiarize yourself with the biker culture a little bit. (Note: I don't own or ride a motorcycle)

1. The loud pipes saving lives is overrated, but true. Bikes are the smallest things driving on the highways and if one is in a car's blind spot, the only way for the car to know they're there is if the bike has loud pipes.

2. In the average biker group (not all) having quiet pipes is akin to being the kid on the baseball team that has glasses and can't hit/catch/run. "What a nerd."

3. If your biker neighbor just stripped out the baffles, which is likely, his engine is going to have some serious problems after around 20,000 miles. Baffles are there to do more than just quiet the bike.

4. Harley's are much better machines today than they were twenty years ago. In the 80's and early 90's a Harley could barely get from point A to point B, now, they are very well put together bikes. (And REALLY overpriced) If the neighbor has a Harley from later than 1995 or so, he's just revving the engine to do it or he's not revving the engine and it's so loud you just assume he is.

5. You will never get through to a biker with loud pipes to change his habits with the bike. Ever. You may hate him, call the cops, pass an ordinace, fight him, kill his mother or break his bike with a sledgehammer. He will find a way to keep motoring with his loud pipes.

6. My advice to you is to just live with it. (Now there's advice that no one wants...) It will be a hell of a lot more trouble than it's worth to eliminate this nuicance.

If you live within a 500 mile drive of Sturgis, SD you ought to stop in next year the week before the rally starts. It will illuminate you...

How about shooting him multiple times point blank in the cranium with .440 corbon hollow points? That would probably break his habit pretty damn quickly.

There may be some small safety benefit to loud pipes, but if safety were truly the concern, we'd see bikers decked out in road worker style florescent outfits and full faced helmets. Loud pipes are definitely intended to draw attention, but more as a "look at me, I'm cool (see your point #2)" not "look and don't run me over" measure. In my opinion, the irritation factor of loud pipes trumps any safety benefit by a huge margin.

As Jim Fiore notes above, the herd instinct/peer conformance/image consciousness is a powerful influence among many in the biking community. Of course there are a lot of SUVs out there that are never going to step off the pavement as well. It's not just the Harley guys.

As a motorcyclist I take offense to this post. I agree, Harley's are loud and obnoxious. Personally, I enjoy sport bikes. However, your complaints about motorcycles in general screams "ignorance" to me.

What you fail to recognize is that motorcylces cost a fraction of an automobile, get way better gas mileage and are FUN. With motorcycles it is about the journey, not the destination. I doubt you get the same satisfaction out of piling the wife and kids into your mini-van that I get when I get on my bike.

Also, not all bikers are these outlaws that are attempting to compensate for having a small penis. A good motorcyclist will read up on the sport, take safety classes and ride with full leathers to be as prepared as possible. Sure, there are some punk kids like that Ben Roethlisberger who thinks he knows everything, and they ultimately pay a price. Someone who is prepared however, is able to keep themselves out of harms way and should they get into an accident, will most likely survive.

I would also like to point out that most motorcycle accidents are caused by automobile drivers who aren't paying attention because they are too busy bitching at the kids in the back seat or chatting with their golf buddies on the cell phone. Also, after riding a motorcycle for a while, you become more aware of what is going on around you. This awareness translates to driving cars/trucks/suvs and thus you become a better automobile driver as a result.

And I'd also like to add that you could always go over to the neighbors house and tell him that the noise wakes your kids up and that you would appreciate it if he wouldn't go full throttle until he gets some distance from your house.

I'm the Hi-Viz-Aerostich/Shoei-wearing commute-in-any-weather MSF-trained David-Hough-reading rider of Japanese-built bikes here. Ok, one of my bikes has a Muzzy system that on it when I bought it, but I put in the quiet-core insert.

A few minor nits with your otherwise good rant: 1) Harleys come from the factory with mufflers and some of them stay that way. It's just that no one notices those ones. 2) Many motorcycle accidents are caused by inattentive drivers and certainly those most likely to cause serious injury are collisions with another vehicle, but the largest group of motorcycle crashes are single vehicle and hence the fault of the rider.
