I can't possibly enumerate the running celebs I've known over the past 32 years, but I've met a few entertainment people just by virtue of where I grew up.

I went to Jr high with Karen Silverheels (Jay "Tonto" Silverheels's daughter) and her actor father was sometimes at school functions.

Danny Bonaduce (partridge family) was one of the neighborhood deliquents, I ran cross country against Chris Knight (middle brady boy who hurdled during track season), Jamie Farr (from MASH, corporal klinger) lived around the corner, and Maureen McCormick(Marcia, Marcia , Marica) was in my high school class as was Dean Jones's(think old disney movies) daughter , Deanna. Rocker Cheri Curri who did a stint with Joan Jett and the blackhearts was also from my school. I met Joan Baez at a Bob Dylan concert (she was sitting right behind me). From other sports, the most notable I can think of would have to be Robin Yount of the milwaukee brewers who graduated a couple of years ahead of me from Taft high.

If you read about the old days of the NBA, or anything in depth about Russell, you'll find Russell's laugh is truly legendary in the sports world. A world class piece on Russell by Frank Deford that was in SI several years ago has some references to the laugh that are pretty fun to read. He usually refers to it as a cackle. In fact, Deford's story is so convincing that after reading it I felt (and still do) that Russell, not Jordan or anyone else, was truly the greatest hoopster of all time, and that the Celts were the greatest team of all time.

I interviewed Wil Ferrell the other day (that's my job) and we chatted about running most of the time...he's done two marathons and I'm in training for my 9th. He's a funny guy and the new movie, TELLEDEGA NIGHTS, is hysterical.

Back in the 60's and 70's I ran cutting edge trendoid restaurants and bars in NYC so my celeb list goes on forever and as a track official I met many runners.

But I'm sure I'm the only man to have dated both Elaine Stritch and DJ (forDavenie Johanna) Heatherton....Joey was her stage name. I baby sat Christa Sheilds who also uses her middle name Brooke.

I've had my 'goes by another name misses' too. Once two good looking women came in to the restaurant and asked for me. They introduced themselves as Alice and Carol and said they were told I'd entertain them until mutual friend Richard W. got there. I spent about a half an hour hitting on the one that wasn't Ali MacGraw.

I was looking forward to meeting Hodgie-san this weekend but I hear he sent his regrets yesterday.My mates for watertable duty at the Kelley Race in Ct. 5 Aug include Nina Kuscsik,Amby Burfoot,Patti Dillon (Dan is running) Coach Squires and Tom Fleming plus a few more of that ilk. Not a shabby crew!!

QUESTION- The met/know syndrome.... can you really say you met someone if they only gave you an autograph and took a snappy phone moment photo?

At the place I ate breakfast most mornings in the 80's I'd see this gal with a big head more often than not...after a while we would nod hello...Hey Deb- Hi Tom... join in kidding the waitress,share a paper and a weather comment. But if asked I would not say I know Debbie Harry. I suspect most would say yes.

Hey it's NYC shit happens all the time-one of my waitress friends,Mary Steenburgen got lucky.. got discovered.. made some movies.. married another star and when they invited Hil and Bill to the wedding----they came!!.......see shit happens all the time in NYC.
