We merged two Mary Cain threads into 1. The 2nd one was entitled, "Update: Mary Cain makes another sexual allegation - Alberto Salazar looked at her exposed breasts while she was sleeping"
I'm reminded of comments Cain made about people on running forums discussing her [the same way they do any other notable runner], describing them saying "All those old men..."
Stunning lack of self awareness by Mary. Doesn't she realize she's Jumped The Shark with the Victim Card? NO ONE needs to hear any more. Stop it Mary. Your legacy has been permanently tarnished with this crap.
Of course NONE of us has ever encountered creepy teachers, coaches and other people in our lives. Never. Every single person in my sporting life, educational and work journey has been 100% ethical, moral with zero bad traits.
oh, except for one of our HS track coaches who was dating an 8th grader...
My HS coach was young and attractive, the senior girls for at least 4 years were all over him. He rejected them all, married an older rich woman, stole her money and left town.
It's impossible to say anything relevant on the issue without more context
In Suzy Favor-Hamiliton's biography, "Fast Girl," she writes that her coach discourages her from having sex before competition. The book is basically a memoir of someone suffering from bipolar disorder, and hypersexuality, or a high sex drive, is one of the possible symptoms. Was Favor-Hamilton's coach "creepy" or did he cross a line? It's a matter of opinion, relies far too much on the current cultural moment, and disregards the important part: the tension between her likely higher desire for sex and his instructions.
Also, a lot of you are being brutal to Cain. She's human, and deserves compassion, no matter what you think of her as a person.
Mary's attitude and pattern of behavior is very toxic not just for others but FOR HER. She's highly rewarded (financially and emotionally) every time she trots out a victim narrative. So she chases the high of doing it again and again. But the problem for her is that this has become her only view of success.
How is she going to go and actually achieve, being a bad@ss doctor, dealing with extremely difficult and stressful scenarios daily, when her default is "I am owed by others and I only succeed when I am a victim of others". Who wants to hire such a person? Who wants to trust such a person as their doctor? She is a liability wherever she ends up. And she doesn't even realize that she is self sabotaging.

Yeah I made the same point a little differently but the mod got uptight.
Yeah these morons have no clue. The talked about sex in school all the time. Touching is a different deal.
If you’re a male coach for high school girls, it’s your job and responsibility not to engage in any sex related discussion. I’m sure there are some extreme cases where it may be the right thing to do (a girl confesses to you that she was assaulted or something), but overall it’s to be avoid.
High school girls will try to goad you into it because they are immature and think it’s funny, but you just avoid and redirect. Not because of liability or anything. It’s just inappropriate

“their overbearing parents and her creepy coach, who took perverse interest in the sex lives of his female runners.”
Needs more context. Presumably the book has more details. Staying up all night really isn’t the best for recovery.
Sure, but who can trust her version of events. When you resort to petty complaints bout Jenny Simpson and Shalane Flanagan not being friendly, in light of all the legitimate complaints about Salazar/Treasure, with seemingly no ability to self-reflect on her own (or her parents') mistakes, it becomes clear that she has an insatiable need to be a victim. She should have just stuck to the actual issues with her coach and she would have retained more credibility. But that doesn't sell books.
She simply made herself the victim because it sells. It was the route Kara took without ever admitting her own faults. It was the route Des took without ever admitting any of her own faults. It simply makes it read like fiction because many that were around at the time know different. The coach or the accused abuser will never be interviewed or asked for their side of the story. I wish someone would suit but it is not worth the trouble.
