I can't imagine being that stupid and that bad at your job. Cameraman is such an unnecessary job anyways. Mount small cameras on poles and you are done with it.
Just watched the Men’s Elite 800m (Jewett, NCAA 1-2 Arkansas Runners) get completely demolished by a CAMERAMAN WALKING ONTO THE TRACK.
The runners had just come through at 51.05 for the first lap, moments before a cameraman walks right into lane 1 with his huge equipment, and completely flattens the entire field.
DNF for the entire field. (Arizona State’s Dayton Carlson finished the race in 1:57)
Have we ever seen a bigger, unavoidable disaster in such a high-profile race? These guys were about to finish in 1:44-1:45 presumably.
I’m sure a video of the aftermath will surface soon, but if anyone here was at the meet, drop your thoughts:
True story. World Masters Outdoor Championship M40 400m Hurdles finals. A buddy of mine is setting his blocks and commences a practice start when an official walks off the infield directly in his path. He has to pull up causing a calf strain and no final for him. An oops just doesn't cut it!
Not only was this the first thing I thought of - I was going to post it but you beat me to it :D
In terms of a one-off collision this one is worst. Szabo was probably what, 100 lbs soaking wet and I believe thats KAP - Kofi Amoa Prah, he was a solid 180-185 and was probably running 20mph at that point. It's crazy to think of all the far worse outcomes that could have happened there.
So obviously this didn't have the same one on one impact but agree this is about as bad as it gets. To take out basically an entire 800m field at the bell is pretty bad/impressive. I do love homie that was mid pack, nearly bounced into the bleachers there at the star/finish and just decided to continue and get the dub in 1.57 - respect.

We have hundreds of posers with iPhones and cams from Best Buy on the track who then show a 1 min clip or 3 pics in Instagram and think they are Anderson Cooper. Most are high school kids. Meets don't manage the volunteers because it's free publicity.
This happens to some degree or another at every track meet. We really need to establish some rules around this. Photographers are constantly on the track. In what other sport are the photographers allowed on the field of play? I would say the same for fans and coaches. Get the eff off the GD track and the infield. We've got social media influencers, drones, photographers, best friends, girlfriends, rabid coaches screaming and running along their athletes. Would love for the NCAA and WA to come down hard on this once and for all. Here's looking at you Brian Clay Invite. That meet is a clown show.
If you're a meet director, get some frigg'n control over the situation.
That clown show seems to be doing ok. If their interactive milieu isn't for you, go to any other meet in the US. If you're a meet director, what frigg'n meets do you run?
Too bad this happened at Mt SAC. Not sure how those two people in reflective vests standing with the photographer didn't stop him. Mistakes happen. But I agree, media need to be trained prior to getting that credential.

Trained? “Uh, don’t step on the track during a race” should take care of it.
I used to feel sorry for Mt. SAC after they remodeled Hilmer Lodge Stadium for the Olympic Trials only to be screwed over by Nike and Tracktown. But they have really screwed up in recent years by allowing Mt. SAC Relays to become a bush league event. They need to clean house and completely rebuild their brand.
That was Phil Knights kneejerk reaction to Eliot Hill tossing aside old tired ways and centralizing Nike Branding, Marketing, Arts, Film, Performance, TV, Luxury towards Hollywood. Hill proclaimed a new generation has taken Nike from quaint rural America to Tinseltown. Only problem is Hollywood is considered on a separate continent from Mt Sac JC, Azusa-Pacific U, Cal Poly Pomona, separated by 10,000 mile ocean (so to speak).
The cameraman should definitely lose whatever press credentials he had, but I agree with another poster: not sure why the rest of the runners didn't finish. Didn't look like anyone was particularly hurt.

I CAN!!! That numb skull needs to be fired immediately and never let on the infield again - A total and complete airhead.
