A link to this post was provided in Rojo's article " LRC Great news: Jakob Ingebrigtsen is already up to running 8km on land as he comes back from Achilles surgery"
The title of that article is incorrect and deceptive.
JI did not have surgery on his Achilles tendon. He had surgery on the sheath surrounding that tendon.
There is the big difference between the two with regards to invasiveness and recovery.
Incorrectly calling that "Achilles surgery" is like labeling surgery on the pericardium 'heart surgery' or labeling surgery to the skin covering the knee as 'knee surgery".

Well are you proposing he siphon out record chasing for non-DL meets? He could do special sections like he did in Paris for the 2 mile record attempt, and that might make sense if he wants to chase the 5,000m record. But for the mile and 1500 his two best times come from regular old DL races that were pretty much perfectly set up (Pre could've used an additional pacer). His 3000m the same in Silesia. You just tell the meet director to limit the field to more like 10-12 racers, and line up Jakob all the way on the outside with the two pacers escorting him (the inside for a mile one). Plenty of guys (including Laros, Nuguse, and Hocker) will be happy to run just behind him in a straight line. I think this could be achieved easily in Silesia or Zurich, and then give Jakob the opportunity to get into the DL Final. So while the 5000m record might be an either/or, chasing the shorter records isn't in my eyes. I agree skipping Europeans is probably a good idea if he's focused on records.
Honestly yeah, it might be a little cheap and gain criticism without any competition but there were plenty of inefficiencies with his Monaco run. First, he still was peaking for Paris so I don’t think his 3:26.73 was his max as I said already. He also ran the first 100m pretty hard (13.4), and the pacemakers could have done a better job on the 2nd and 3rd lap by pushing harder into that 55 second flat pace territory. I think he should plan ONE big WR race (Preferrably Mile or 5000m) in late August without any competition and just following the lights to the hundredth of a second (just like he did in that 2 Mile). He could set up maybe a few tuneups in July to sharpen up. The biggest problem is whether he approaches this fitness again and that’s likely a dream but I can only hope. The other problem is if he tries to peak for the Ultimate WC, i think if he does this he is 1) risking overuse injury again and 2) compromising his maximal ability in the 1500m which I assume he’ll attempt instead of the mile (just cuz he loves it more lmao). I think he should forget any championships this year but of course that’s just my fanboy opinion.
Classic, look at you two already dissecting an upcoming Jakob WR. I feel like this kind of talk is deja vu 2025, where we truly did not expect what we got in the 1500m heats. He has barely started running again, and who really knows where he will be at when he races again. However, once we see him race again and set down a marker, by all means go ahead and speculate.
And I very much doubt anyone - let alone Jakob - is peaking for the Ultimate Championship this year. If anyone has a sniff of an injury, they are not showing up to a made up event - it is an "off" year afterall, finally.
I have a feeling that the Ultimate Championship will not be the thing some people think it is (hint: it is in the name), especially when there is World Indoors, Euros, Comm Games, World U20 or racing fast times in DL. Plenty to keep busy with and manage injuries to reload for 2027 and 2028.

I agree with the first part, but as for the last part, Cooper is just one of a long line of teenage phenoms, including Jakob, that you could trace back to Jim Ryun.
If there’s a line, there’s massive gap between him and the next guy. He broke a 30-year old HS 800m by 4 seconds. To be 4th on all-time US 800m list at age 16, is jaw dropping. Ryun was a 4:07 miler when he was 16.
So let's say optimistically, he builds up and is able to really start training in April with most of this month building up mileage and his base and April incorporating more workouts. He certainly has a *chance* at European Championships August 10-16 if he is fit and in race shape by July. This would allow for a pretty straightforward DL qualification too as he could do Pre and/or London and 1500s are back-loaded with two in late August.
Perhaps the other timeline is running at Silesia and Zurich (both have 1500s) after a low-key race somewhere else. This could get him into the DL final if he can finish top 3 in both, and he'll need 5 performances to get into the World Ultimate Champs 1500. However, he's already in that meet's 5,000 via his Paris gold and could be content with doing the DL circuit for the 1500 and racing at World Ultimate in the 5,000.
I think it would be a huge mistake if he focused on the European/WA DL final championships this year. This might be a hot take but I think at his best (in Paris), he was capable of sub 3:26. But from 2021 -2024 he had a global championship to peak for. Jakob has to make a big decision this year on whether to focus on WRs (which IMO supersede any championship this year) or focus on getting golds (which won’t move the needle at all in his GOAT rankings). I’ll respect whatever he does but I’m pretty sure he knows that he ATLEAST needs one Olympic distance record to set a legendary legacy.

His goal is to run the European Championships in August. Pending his fitness at Euros, he will plan out the remainder of the summer.

Finally a voice of reason. WR talk is premature and ludicrous right now.
Most likely scenario is Jakob turns out to be like his brothers and never runs as fast as he did before.

Do you realize the prize pool in the Ultimate Championship is absolutely massive and backed by a much larger organization than GST?
Also stop with the world record talk for Jakob. He's not getting any this year, and in the future his best shot is in the 5000m, with the mile and under being too short and the 10k and over too long.
Even if he gets healthy again, the 5000m is no guarantee. I feel as though people heavily underestimate that world record.

Have you read that? I saw he said that before this procedure in the Sean Ingle interview, but now we are looking at a different timeline. European Champs is not the picnic it once was, so he can’t open up there and expect to have success. He’ll need to be feeling ready in July.
Jakob will always be relevant. At least for the next couple generations at least. He might be done as the best runner in the world. But for a generation the general consensus was that Daniel Komen’s 7:20 was unbreakable, and furthermore, that the Africans were simply too good. And a white boy from Norway said “hold my beer,” and he put the fear of a Norway god in them. So he remains relevant. And for all we know, there is no Cooper Lutkenhaus without Jakob.
I would murder someone for Jakob. Not for Lagat or Komen.
So hes the best ever, the best theree ever will be even if he never runs again.

no offense but you guys aren’t even reading my entire post. Likewise, Jakob was on cross training from october-Feb in 2024 and still came out and ran 3:26.73 and 7:17.55 so this Jakob is done with WRs rhetoric is a bit rich in response to me when I already conceded he may not be.
That’s why I suggested that he not run any championships so he can be ready to run WRs in August/September were he to find that fitness again.

If he is still in WR fitness, that’s a bad idea. Nobody will care if he wins another European championship gold, everyone will care if he breaks the 1500, Mile or 5000m WRs. I commend him for running everything but he needs to take Kerr’s approach this year if he wants to set atleast one Olympic distance WR. Time is running out and I suspect that the volume of hard racing is catching up to him. Opening at a championship where he is the defending champion will no doubt shift his focus. If he gets injured again then we are looking towards 2028 where he is 27, the chances get even lower for a WR.

You think WRs are in play this year?
Yes. Did you think WRs were in play in 2024? Nobody on this site did and he broke the 3k WR and was a good bet on breaking the Mile and 5000 as well.
Why are you worried? Jakob is coming back, sooner or later, he will come back stronger than ever. If I were Jakob, I would not give up defending the triple/double European gold medals. There is time, the records will fall, all 5.
p.s. Jakob can always save time with a record en route. 😉

People need to stop caring about world records. If he can get into PR shape, then he can get some new world records — simple as that. He’s still young enough and talent doesn’t go away. Stay healthy, stay patient, stay optimistic
