Demi fought with lawyers for years, 3 years to be exact, so that's why the announcement was delayed. She claimed she never knowingly took the substance, BUT, unlike Shelby. Never decided to make a come back once her ban was lifted.
"fighting" against a ban is of course no reason to keep it all secret—unless of course USADA is in charge...
I 100% agree, I wish we had more transparency with the process. There was obviously a deal made, it had to be somewhere along the lines of don't compete and we will delay the announcement until you exhaust your legal options.
This has to be the longest delayed doping announcement in track and field history.

Flotrack has a good article covering it
Her dad was also caught doping in the 90's while at Baylor.
Man he went from 25th at his XC Conference (Nov 2019) -> 1st at Conference beating 2nd place and 2 Kenyans by a minute (Feb 2021 Covid year).
then that indoors he runs 4:15 for 3rd at conference loses by 3 seconds (Mar 2020 last race before COVID shutdown) -> 4:03 mile 1st place wins by 13 seconds (Mar 2021). And he runs a 8:00 and 13:40 in all in the same conference meet.
First I wanna know how many guys in the NCAA can pull off that triple? I can’t lie there’s a handful of guys that can probably pull this triple off at conference but they’d be risking injury big time.
4:15 Mile guy in March 2020 turned into a 13:32 5k guy in March 2021. That’s crazy man, the dude sat at home during COVID and started plotting. And he wasn’t the only one who took advantage of COVID if you catch my drift.
- Skyler Franklin. Currently at LSU. Given a provisional silent ban 2 years ago that caused her to miss world U20s. Eventually ended up excused without any long-term consequences since she was 16 and likely given stuff without her knowledge while at Montverde Academy. AIU recently appealed, case is currently pending.
- Grace Nwokocha. Athlete under Duane Ross at NCAT who was banned the summer of 2022 for a doping violation. Currently banned.
- Consider Ekanem. Athlete under Duane Ross at NCAT. Apparently banned right before SECs(?) last year following a positive test by the NCAA. Scratched from NCAAs, not on the Tennessee roster, and hasn't run a race since.
Edit: Here's a lesser known one: Steve Mullings. Withdrew from the 2005 NCAA championships following a positive test. Would later catch a lifetime ban in 2011.
I didn’t think they did life time bans? Does that take being a repeat offender?
Repeat offender. I believe his 2011 infraction was his 3rd ban. I'm not sure if the AIU does them, but his ban was given by a JAAA court of officials, not an international organization. I think USATF does them too, but iirc the only active lifetime ban for an athlete right now is for Randy Barnes (lol).
MSSU/NCAA rules dont have to state it publicly but her records were striped by the university and the MIAA conference, NCAA/ustfccca still honors her D2 record.
