What does Kara Goucher do besides commentate on races?
PS. Keep it on the 'crete.
Keeps reminding everyone about her past performances and ragging on Al Sal. that takes all day
She mentioned that short film of her at the Millrose games and said it was a total surprise to her that they did it.
She always talked about them cutting to a commercial during a race and was not happy with it but the network insisted they needed a commercial either in that race or the mens 2 mile. She is not management.
The majority of pro runners never make top level podiums, and the minimal amount of money they make reflects that. They make financial and other sacrifices to pursue their running dreams.
When those types of pro runners finally retire, most work at average jobs that actually pay them more than they made as a pro runner. They then spend many years working hard trying to dig themselves out of the financial hole they dug for themselves as a pro runner.
They get real jobs when their running careers are over. Pro runners don't make enough money to retire.
You mean the average pro can’t retire at 31 after 10 years of making $75k ? 🤣
I doubt that the "average pro," as that term is generally used on this site, makes anywhere close to $75k from running, even if you throw in the part-time job at the shoe store.
Disclaimer that I am new to following track and field. I have some idea of what careers retired athletes from other sports do pivot into, and some of course make enough money that they can do whatever they like or nothing at all.
But what options are pro runners pursuing? I don't think some mid level distance guy who is pro but not podium at big meets is pulling enough cash to just not work after age 30-something. Do a lot go into coaching? Or just leave and go back to whatever they maybe studied in college? Genuinely curious what the options are after seeing the threads about who is cooked for 2026, Athing Mu, etc etc
They come here. This place is full of old sharts who were apparently phenomenal in their heyday.
more like up for a cup of coffee in the bigs maybe, coulda woulda shoulda, i could have a been a condendah..
Quite a few move into roles at footwear companies. Product and marketing jobs, mostly.
Agreed. Nick Willis is a good example. He manages events and sports marketing for Tracksmith. I also believe he is involved with coaching for youth programs for 1st-8th graders.

this was my sober realization, at age 21, though things came together, to make a bit of sense of the effort. there was no clear path to yhe olympics that did not involve fnance issues and everything hinged on health to get to the next level.
