It was not common for people to drink water the way we do today back then. Most people conveniently forget that water bottles only became commonplace in the late 00s. If you wanted some water you would pour a glass from the tap or drink from the water fountain. Hydration “wasn’t a thing”.
The idea that “people looked older in the past” has been circulating on the internet for years now, and it seems plausible to credit this effect to a lack of hydration. People also had “harder lives” and didn’t exercise, but this doesn’t explain why Pre in particular looked so old.
