I'm sure that most poele on here agree that common sense should prevail but common sense and the IAAF (or UKA or most other athlietcs authorities for that matter) does not always go hand in hand. It would be a tragedy if someone misses out on a championship place on a technicality adn this is an issue that should be cleared up for the future.

You can't start a race when two competitors are already "in" the race!There are no extra rules for pacemakers...that was a stupid and unnecessary mistake, it's going to cost some fast guys the ticket for Gothenburg.

They weren't competitors though. They were paid pacemakers.
I don't think it'll make any difference to who goes to Gothenburg and you'll struggle to convince any of the competitors that they didn't run a 1:45.x
i agree with those who say it's a pretty minor thing.
(as an aside, did that pacemaker really get paid? he seemed to really struggle, even with the head start, to make it through 350-400 meters at, what, a 50-51 pace? then again, perhaps having someone like that is best - he couldn't end up running far too fast for the first 200 like so many pacemakers do.)
and i also think it would be downright silly for anyone to try to protest the results so that these times are disallowed for any reason.
that said, it seems to me like having a pacemaker start ahead of the field is breaking a rule that is a sensible rule. and it shouldn't be done. so i'd hope that the BMC changes their methods in this regard going forward.
He'll have been paid but not much - the BMC have a small budget. I pacemade a couple of regional BMC races last year and got a free t-shirt :)
If you listen to the video, you will hear that it says, Ian Lowthian, he had a good run earlier on!! So maybe that explains why he may have tired!!
Where were all these runners in March during the Commonwealth Games?
BMC have a huge buget, i paced 3 races and got 100quid for it. Plus Hill took at least £1750 home with him. Rimmer £600 and Ellis £300. Doesnt sound a small buget to me.

The prize budget is good, but £100 for pacing three races in a top domestic meet isn't much.
hate it when people start criticising performances because of the pacemaker. "oh it wasn't fair, cos he/she had a pacemaker".
Fact is that person physically ran that fast. end of story. Even if the pacemaker started at the 1500 start, hill still ran 2 laps in 1.45.1. nobody can say different.
The pacemaker is there for anyone in the race who is fast enough to go with it. If you can't go with the pace but someone else can, well that's not their fault, its yours!

Thats a real shame. You can see clearly Hill, Rimmer and Ellis ran the full 800m so they'll only lose out to a technicality.
Still, if they've done it once, they'll do it again.
Since when could gbrathletics.com make a definitive ruling on voiding races or not. On what basis have they made their decision? What ruling? And what is their interpretation? As far as I was aware it was up to the meeting referee to disqualify athletes, and these athletes were not disqualified on 10th June by any such person.
If we are starting a trend for disqualifying athletes post the event, then I suggest that Asafa Powell's WR be chalked off from Gateshead because pacing by an technical device is also not allowed, and he ran next to one of those white ball cameras on rails for at least 50metres, which is technicaclly pacing.
Of course, I am not suggesting that Powell and everyone in the race should be dq'd - I am just pointing out that it is for the meeting referee to make the decision to dq athletes, and not some statistical website.
In that sense, Hill's, Rimmer's and everyone else's times stand.
